- Applications close 4 April
**About the Department**:
The Department of Industry, Science and Resources and our broader portfolio are integral to the Australian Government’s economic agenda. Our purpose is to help the government build a better future for all Australians through enabling a productive, resilient and sustainable economy, enriched by science and technology. We do this by:
- Growing innovative & competitive businesses, industries and regions
- Investing in science and technology
- Strengthening the resources sector.
**About the National Measurement Institute**:
The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is a large division within the Department of Industry, Science, and Resources (DISR). The NMI supports DISR in meeting its objectives by being the national authority on measurement.
We play a fundamental role underpinning the Australian economy by maintaining and regulating Australia’s measurement system, developing and maintaining national measurement standards, and delivering world-class measurement products and client services.
Measurement is integral to a successful economy and to the progress of innovation and science. Our work supports the productivity and growth of Australian industries, and aims to ensure a fair, safe, healthy and competitive Australia. We provide assurance that Australia’s measurement system is fit for purpose, and evolves in line with advances in science and technology and with the changing measurement needs of NMI’s stakeholders in government, industry, business, and research.
**About the Legal Metrology Branch**
NMI’s Legal Metrology Branch (LMB) plays an important role in ensuring Australia’s trade measurement transactions are estimated to be worth more than $970 billion each year with Australian consumers and industry relying on trusted measurements for fair trade in goods and services. The branch plays an important role in administering the regulatory framework that underpins measurements and measuring instruments used for trade and legal purposes. This includes regulating measuring instruments (e.g. petrol bowsers and supermarket scales) and the measurement goods both packaged and loose.
LMB has a national network of trade measurement inspectors who audit businesses to assess their trade measurement law compliance. They take appropriate action where there have been breaches of the law.
LMB also issues licences to third party organisations known as servicing licensees, who help to ensure businesses are using accurate measuring instruments.
NMI provides measurement infrastructure, services and advice that support whole of government outcomes.
**About the Policy and Regulatory Services Section**
The Policy and Regulatory Services Section provides timely, accurate and appropriate support for the Secretary and Chief Metrologist, including advice and services relating to measurement policy, regulatory and technical matters. This enables the delivery of a strong and effective national measurement system that is trusted and accepted domestically and internationally and does not impose unnecessary barriers to trade through restrictive requirements.
**About the Policy Unit**
The Policy Unit is responsible for the development and maintenance of the documentary infrastructure that underpins the national measurement system including:
- Developing a range of policy reforms relating to the implementation of risk and principles-based technical policy in new and existing areas to strengthen Australia’s metrological framework for domestic and international trade.
- Working with stakeholders from industry, government and the international measurement community to help ensure Australia operates competitively in the global environment.
- Contributing to complex, strategic projects that support the Chief Metrologist and CIML Member.
- Representing Australia on OIML technical working groups in the development of international recommendations.
- Contributing to the ongoing development, implementation and review of the branch’s operational policy, procedural and governance documents.
**The opportunity**:
Reporting to the Senior Legal Metrology Policy Officer, the position is required to undertake complex work with limited direction operating with reasonable autonomy and accountability.
**What’s in it for you?**:
The capabilities listed below describe the specific skills, knowledge and behaviours required to successfully perform this job role:
