The Deaf Education Program is part of the Learning Diversity Department. The work of the Learning Diversity Department is underpinned by the College’s commitment to valuing and accommodating individual differences in students. This role is part of a team of approximately 4 Deaf Education Support staff, three Teachers of the Deaf and the Director of Learning Diversity.

MLC teachers take a proactive approach to student learning that is dynamic and adaptive, and the classroom is regularly revitalised by new teaching practices and methodologies that keep our students engaged.

Some of your primary duties and responsibilities will include the following:

- Pre-class support with individual/small group of students, to clarify topic specific vocabulary and concepts
- To interpret, clarify or note take for the deaf/hard of hearing students in the classroom, conveying both the content and spirit of what is said by the teachers and the other students, using language appropriate to the students’ levels.
- To interpret, where required, at parent information evenings, celebration evenings and extracurricular activities
- To interpret information with Signed Supported English (SSE) and using a combination of Auslan and English word order
- Developing a culture of high expectations for all students
- Developing strong relationships with colleagues, students and parents
- Working with colleagues to embed more effective teaching strategies into the classroom.

About You
- Proficient in Auslan
- Appropriate understanding of the educational, social and emotional needs of the deaf/hard of hearing students
- Capacity to form supportive relationships with deaf/hard of hearing students
- Capacity to work effectively with deaf/hard of hearing students to enable access to the curriculum
- Capacity to interact positively with deaf/hard of hearing students and peers
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to student learning and wellbeing.
- Effective planning and organisational skills
- Proven competence with use of technology in a learning environment
- Acts professionally and maintains appropriate confidentiality.
- Right to work in Australia
- Adherence to all College policies and demonstration of behaviours in accordance with the Child Safe Standards.
- A NAATI qualification is desired
