Sydney, Australia The Garvan Institute of Medical Research Full time

Garvan’s 2030: Discoveries to Impact Strategy is designed to galvanise Garvan’s researchers, clinical staff and community around our vision of _Global leadership in discoveries to impact patient care_. The Garvan / Kinghorn Cancer Centre is uniquely placed to translate research discoveries from basic science through pre-clinical modelling and early phase clinical trials. Our team of medical oncologists within lung and gastrointestinal cancer has broad capabilities across each of these fields. This role provides a unique opportunity for an oncologist-in-training to learn and contribute to clinical and scientific cancer research.

Dr Venessa Chin is a post-doctoral research fellow at Garvan, leading translational research into cellular genomics of non-small cell lung cancer and directs Cancer Division blood and tissue biobanking. The proximity and robust collaboration between Garvan and St Vincent’s allows unique opportunities for translational projects, such as obtaining fresh cancer tissue from bronchoscopy for analysis by single-cell RNA sequencing. Dr Chin’s main research interests are focused on using single cell sequencing technologies to improve patient care.

Dr Subotheni Thavaneswaran is Clinical Lead of the Molecular Screening and Therapeutics (MoST) Program, working as a post-doctoral fellow across the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre and the Garvan Institute. In this role, she partakes in weekly molecular tumour board meetings, aiming to link comprehensive genomic profiling results to therapeutic opportunities for patients with advanced cancers, treating patients on genomic biomarker-selected phase 2 trials and several related translational research projects.

Dr Hao-Wen Sim is the Clinical Lead for the national brain cancer trials group (COGNO) at the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre and a Visiting Scientist at the Garvan. Dr Sim has expertise in clinical trial operations, methodology and biostatistics through his ongoing work at the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre and having previously completed a Master of Biostatistics at The University of Sydney (was awarded the Biostatistics Collaboration of Australia Star Graduate Award, Judy Simpson Biostatistics Scholarship, Les Irwig General Epidemiology Award and Australasian Epidemiological Association Top Student Prize). Dr Sim provides biostatistical support for clinical and translational projects across multiple campuses.

This is a 1.0 FTE position, split equally between gastrointestinal and lung cancer, with 0.6 FTE of clinics at TKCC, and 0.4 FTE set aside for research, with the potential to attend cancer genetics clinics as part of professional development.

Key Responsibilities
The _Clinical Research Fellow _will be responsible for:

- Contributing to translational research projects within lung and gastrointestinal cancers in collaboration with scientific teams
- Developing new trial protocols
- Overseeing the patient tissue acquisition program, including the rapid autopsy program
