**Role**:
The primary role of the ATSI Mentor is to support the classroom teacher in achieving the best possible education outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait students of Mount Rowan Secondary College.

A secondary role is to assist in other ways not directly in support of those students, but which assists the class teacher / Heads of House / Wellbeing Team in facilitating an understanding and knowledge of all students of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. The ATSI Mentor is directly responsible to the Assistant Principal in the execution of his/her duties.

The Department of Education, considers that being Aboriginal is a genuine occupational qualification for this position under section.

**Responsibilities**:

- Provides coordination support to teachers through rostering and the organisation of the work of a team of aides, including supervision and guidance.
- Conducts routine presentations to parents to assist teachers in communicating objectives and outcomes relating to educational programs and/or students.
- Liaise with external providers of support services.** Essential Criteria**
- Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage
- Demonstrated ability to work with children of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander heritage and assist in building their self-esteem
- Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills for building relationships with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and parent community
- Work closely with our school KESO and Koorie Curriculum Champion
- Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised with a small group
- Ability to implement a program directed by the class teacher and/or other specialist staff as appropriate.
- Readiness to be involved in parent school partnership initiatives
- A willingness to undergo training as required
- A willingness to attend school excursions to support the needs to ATSI students of MRSC.

This role aims to support students through their educational journey offering rap-around strategies to engage, improve participation and attendance and elevate motivation to improve personal learning goals and educational outcomes. The Successful applicant will work alongside Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students in a variety of ways including one on one in learning spaces and with small group activities. The Mentor will be required to form a connection with the Koorie Engagement Support Officer. The Marrung Aboriginal Education Plan (2016 - 2026) priority areas and actions, alongside Mount Rowan Secondary College’s Marrung Implementation Plan will further guide the purpose of this position.
