The Counsellor, School of Health and Social Development position is a pilot program funded by the Higher Education Participation and Partnership Program (HEPPP). The Counsellor will be responsible for the provision of short term, evidenced-based psychological intervention to Deakin University School of Health and Social Development students, promoting wellbeing, enhancing the mental health literacy of the School community and minimising negative impacts of mental ill-health on learning and student progress.
- Based at our Geelong, Waterfront Campus
- Part time (0.6FTE) and Fixed Term until 31 Dec 2024
- HEW 8 $109,837 - $125,755 + 17% Superannuation (pro rata, part time)

Reporting to the Manager, Student Psychological Programs and Services, the Counsellor will:
- Provide evidence-based assessment and short-term psychological interventions to support School of Health and Social Development student mental health and improve academic outcomes.
- Assess for, and manage, emerging, acute, and complex student mental health issues, including student risk.
- Identify student mental health trends to design, implement and evaluate initiatives that are based on best practice guidelines.
- Provide expert advice and consultation to School of Health and Social Development staff and students regarding student mental health.
- Provide training and education to enhance student mental health literacy and improve student outcomes.
To be successful, you’ll have:
Selection
- Registration as a Psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or
- membership of Australian Association of Social Work (AASW) with registration as mental health Social Worker
- Postgraduate qualifications or progress towards postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
- Knowledge of the tertiary university context and the range of issues faced by a diverse student population, e.g. First-in families, transition, cultural, pressures of tertiary study
- Skills and experience in providing counselling via phone and online
- Advanced clinical, assessment and intervention skills
