**Selection Criteria**:
**SC1** Degree qualified/Graduate in psychology, social work, behavioural/social sciences, counselling or a related discipline that provides a sound understanding and knowledge of working with children in a direct counselling setting and assessing and supporting young children at risk. Extensive experience in a school setting will be highly regarded, especially working with high ability students.

**SC2** Knowledge and demonstrated therapeutic ability to provide brief interventions and counsel young children to achieve positive outcomes, including experience in developing and implementing Individual Education Plans.

**SC3** Demonstrated ability to develop and implement student wellbeing programs within a school setting (eg. mindfulness, social skills, emotional management/coaching, self-care etc.)

**SC4** Demonstrated ability to provide family support and work with children in a multicultural school environment.

**SC5** Ability and experience to conduct risk assessments and to develop action plans that mitigate these risks.

**SC6** Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively and to network with a wide range of people within the education and wider community.

**Role**:
The Wellbeing Counsellor will work closely with members of the Student Wellbeing Team and other members of the Leadership Team to provide high level counselling and support services to improve student learning outcomes and undertake advanced wellbeing interventions that support students and the school. The focus of this role will be to:

- undertake individual and/or group counselling and wellbeing interventions with students to assist them in enhancing their capability to self-manage their social, emotional, and educational needs.
- work as a member of the Wellbeing Team to plan and implement evidence-based intervention strategies for students with complex needs (including collaborating with parents and families, other professionals and agencies when appropriate).
- provide case management and support to students identified at risk, including coordinating and/or participating in Student Support Group meetings.
- contribute to the development and implementation of student safety and behaviour plans as required.
- provide information and feedback to the Student Learning Coordinators regarding individual student’s needs, issues and concerns that will assist students with mental health issues to improve their engagement at school.
- maintain appropriate records and provide written and oral reports in accordance with Department of Education (DE) and school policies.
- liaise with other DE areas and external service providers with a view to optimising service access for at risk students and where relevant, their families.
- maintain professional competence and continued professional learning, including attending professional development activities throughout the year.
- meet relevant policies and legislative requirements in relation to student health information and privacy.
- undertake other duties consistent with qualifications and experience as required.

**Responsibilities**:
The responsibilities of this position will be:

- Provide counselling and brief interventions to students as required.
- Conduct safety assessments including assessment of risk of suicide, violence, abuse, and neglect and to develop action plans to mitigate any risks including follow up, support plan and referral pathways.
- Liaise with and provide referral to external support agencies and specialists as required.
- Contribute to the development of a whole school approach to student engagement and wellbeing and a positive and secure school environment.
- Advise and assist with the implementation of proactive and preventative wellbeing programs.
- Work collaboratively within the Wellbeing Team to provide coordinated and effective student case coordination.
- Provide feedback and advice to staff on the wellbeing of students whilst bearing in mind privacy constraints.
- In consultation with the relevant member/s of the Leadership Team report cases of risk to relevant authorities and follow DET and child safety requirements.
- Consult with staff and parents on matters relating to student wellbeing and conduct school-based meetings with students and parents.
- Maintain professional ethical standards with respect to confidentiality and duty of care in a school setting.
- Provide reports and recommendations to guide Student Support Groups, Individual Learning Plans and teaching staff to improve academic outcomes and improve student wellbeing.
