THE ROLE

The Department of History and Archaeology, Macquarie University is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow who will take part in a study of papyri from Roman Egypt which provide evidence for the rise and development of Christianity. The appointee will have training and experience in papyrology, including the editing of papyri in Greek and Coptic, and a publication record demonstrating knowledge of religion and society in Roman and Late Roman Egypt. They will be responsible for revising and correcting transcriptions and translations where necessary; collecting and assessing bibliography on relevant papyri; revising existing drafts and augmenting them where appropriate; and producing the final version of the study’s outputs in collaboration with the project team.

Established in 2020, the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University is an interdisciplinary research-focused department with a reputation for teaching excellence, whose researchers solve key challenges facing us in the present through ethical engagement with the past. The Department is dedicated to training students who appreciate the interconnectedness of the ancient world, particularly within the Mediterranean, Near Eastern and north African regions. Macquarie is one of the world’s leading centres of research in Ancient History.

The Department is located within Macquarie's Faculty of Arts which is united in the spirit of interdisciplinary discovery. The Department is housed in the Arts Precinct, which also houses the Macquarie University History Museum (which holds the largest collections of ancient glass in the Southern Hemisphere), and state-of-the-art media facilities. The Department has extensive experience of developing and delivering Object-Based-Learning utilising the collection based in the Macquarie University History Museum.

Internationally recognised and celebrated as a leader in its fields, the Department is ranked #49 in the world for Ancient History (QS Ranking 2023). Our experts in cultures from the earliest states to the modern world provide training in Ancient and Modern History and Archaeology in both specialist degrees (in Ancient History and in Archaeology) and majors in the Bachelor of Arts. In addition, the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies (ACANS), also housed in the Arts precinct, holds the largest collection of Roman and Southern Italian coins in the Southern Hemisphere and has developed a collaboration with the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) in the deployment of cutting-edge science for the study of numismatics.

To Apply

Essential criteria- PhD in a relevant field;- Demonstrated experience in high-quality research and scholarship, which may be evidenced by an internationally competitive publication record and/or success in attracting research support;- Experience in documenting, editing, and analysing papyri from Egypt in Greek and Coptic;- Specialised knowledge of Roman Egypt, especially with regards to Christianity and religion in Roman Egypt;- A record of working collaboratively with fellow academic and professional staff;Desirable criteria- Good reading skills in German, French, and Italian;- Strong interpersonal and communication skills;- A capacity to enhance the University’s reputation through engagement with relevant external stakeholders.
