The School of Biotechnology & Biomolecular Science (BABS) teaches undergraduates, mentors postgraduate research students and conducts research in the disciplines of biotechnology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, environmental microbiology, medical microbiology and immunology.

The Postdoctoral Fellow is sought to carry out a research project involving small molecule drug discovery for the treatment of obesity and related metabolic diseases. The main areas of expertise required for this role include small molecule mass spectrometry and mouse metabolic physiology. Additional skills in pharmacokinetics, toxicology, oral gavage dosing, mouse blood collection, and experience in mouse models of obesity and/or fatty liver disease are desired. This position is also expected to provide lab management support and assist in the supervision of honours and postgraduate research students.

The role reports to Professor Kyle Hoehn and has no direct reports.

**Specific responsibilities for this role include**:

- Conduct research in drug discovery and testing in mouse models of obesity, fatty liver, or related metabolic disorders. Techniques involved include but are not limited to mass spectrometry to measure drug levels (pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution); mouse handling and drug delivery; animal diet formulation from scratch; blood collection; glucose and insulin tolerance testing; EchoMRI analysis; metabolic flux analysis using Seahorse technology and stable isotope or 14C and 3H tracers; and indirect calorimetry.
- Assist in the day-to-day maintenance and operation of the research laboratory, including purchasing, compliance with H&S guidelines and other regulatory issues.
- Assist in the preparation and submission of publications.
- Offer advice and supervision to honours and postgraduate students engaged in research.
- Carry out other research and/or laboratory related duties as directed by supervisor.
- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

To be successful in this role you will have:

- PhD or PhD thesis submitted in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
- Research experience in mouse models of metabolic disease.
- Experience in laboratory management and mouse colony management.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
