The Electron Microscope Unit (EMU) is a central research and research support facility within the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre, providing microscopy and analysis facilities to the research community of the University.

This hands-on role provides strategic support to EMU management team, and leadership to staff and students working within the Unit; supports users in designing and undertaking high quality microscopy and microanalysis research; is responsible for the operational management of the Unit’s laboratories and associated equipment; acts as a liaison with the other facilities of the Centre and Microscopy Australia; and ensures that research is performed safely. The Laboratory Manager reports to the Director, Electron Microscope Unit and may supervise one direct report.

***Who you are**

**Level 7**

You have a PhD or a Bachelors/Master degree with research experience in biological/biomedical or materials electron microscopy, including the theories and principles of electron microscopy, and at least 5 years of relevant laboratory experience. You can also demonstrate your skills and experience in management, organising, budgets, planning and training, as well as high-level verbal and written communications skills. Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training is mandatory.

**Level 8 (in addition to Level 7)**
- A proven track record in a senior role in electron microscopy research support and operational management, in a core facility or microscopy centre
- High level of expertise and demonstrated ability to provide research support in biological or biomedical or materials electron microscopy
- Leadership in a team environment and to develop strong working relationships with key groups external to the immediate work unit
- Capacity to direct and monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the safety management systems
