The Catholic Schools Office (CSO) is responsible for the leadership, operation and management of systemic schools which educate more than 21,000 students in 44 primary schools, 11 secondary schools, one K-12 school, one flexible learning centre and one special school in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.

The Assistant Director RE&S is a senior position within the Catholic Schools system in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. The Assistant Director RE&S in collaboration with members of the Leadership Team provides support to the Director of Schools in the formation and implementation of the strategic direction of the Catholic School system, in the leadership and management of schools and in the implementation of the policies and priorities of the Bishop of the Maitland-Newcastle Diocese.

The position exists to promote the mission of the Catholic Church in education; to affirm the nature and purpose of Catholic Schools; and to ensure the provision of high quality religious education and faith formation that builds staff capacity to inspire students, staff and families to have a deeper relationship with Christ. The Assistant Director RE&S will work with School Principals and Leaders to build a shared vision that is distinctively Catholic, provides exceptional education and nurtures the call to love and serve as a people of faith.

The Assistant Director RE&S will lead a team of Primary and Secondary Education Officers in providing quality advice and experiences to schools in the areas of Religious Education and Spirituality. They will work closely with the clergy of the Diocese, Principals, Religious Education Coordinators, Ministry Coordinators, Religious Studies Coordinators, teachers and other Service Areas within the CSO.

The Assistant Director RE&S works with the Leadership Team and other senior leaders in the Catholic Schools Office to respond to emerging issues and trends within Catholic Education. The Assistant Director RE&S engages in sector-related decision-making and actions the strategic and policy directions of the Catholic Schools Office.

The role is accountable to the Director of Schools and may deputise in the absence of the Director with full delegated authority to uphold the policies of the CSO.

The applicant must provide evidence of the following:

- Practising Catholic, with a clear understanding of contemporary issues in the Catholic Church and a personal commitment to Catholic Education and the mission of Catholic schools and the Catholic Church
- Ability to articulate a sound understanding of the Church's mission in education and possesses a well-developed vision for leadership in the contemporary Catholic school
- Postgraduate qualifications in religious education, theological studies, educational leadership combined with a minimum of ten years teaching experience and five years’ experience as a Principal, or an equivalent combination of experience, training and achievement
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with Principals and School Leaders across a range of school settings and to build their capacity as Faith Leaders and contemporary Leaders of Learning
- Exceptional leadership qualities and a substantial record of achievement and commitment to leading effective professional learning communities and delivering quality formation and learning outcomes for all students
- In depth knowledge of and experience in curriculum and pedagogy and familiarity with state and national developments in education and accreditation
- A demonstrated capacity to contribute to policy formation and to develop and support leaders in ensuring alignment with CSO strategic planning and system priorities.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills, the capacity to effectively use data and manage a range of competing priorities
- Demonstrated abilities in mentoring, communication, relationship building and conflict resolution
- Sound knowledge of all relevant legislation and legal frameworks including child protection, work health and safety, equity and diversity and performance management principles and the capacity to implement relevant plans and policies to ensure strong governance
- Level E Accreditation to Work, Teach and Lead.

Desirable
- K-12 experience
- A strong track record in scholarship in teaching and learning, the nature and purpose of Catholic schooling and/or educational leadership
- Masters level of postgraduate study
