This role is part of NCMI’s Field Operations team within their Engineering and Technology program. This program delivers an extensive portfolio of science-enabling capabilities largely in the marine domain.

As a **Mechanical Technician** within CSIRO's National Collections and Marine Infrastructure (NCMI), your role will be to provide direct support for scientific research on the high sea.

One of the key parts of the position will be delivering primary voyage objectives for the Marine National Facility’s, RV Investigator.

You will resolve unique and sensitive science equipment problems that are mechanical by nature, both in the workshop and on the back deck of the ship.

**Your duties will include**:

- Participating in field trips and seagoing voyages (for up to 60 days) to gain the safe ad successful capture of scientific data.
- Providing a maximum of 85 days at sea in a twelve-month period.
- Participating in the planning of projects and accepting responsibility for carrying out major aspects, making significant contributions to the interpretation and communication of results.
- Liaising with clients to determine their needs and taking responsibility for their satisfaction.
- Identifying and resolving technical issues promptly and constructively.
- Managing a wide variety of tasks, including some that have a high degree of technical difficulty.
- Documenting procedures and training others in systems and processes.
- Developing original techniques, processes or equipment, especially when encountering unforeseen technical problems, or to improve the service provided.

**Salary**:AU$89,680 - AU$101,459 per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

**To be considered you will need**:
**Essential**:

- A relevant mechanical trade certificate or equivalent relevant work experience in an applied field engineering role (mechanical).
- Dogging and Rigging qualifications with demonstrated experience and compliance knowledge.
- Demonstrated high computer literacy using a range of software tools. Examples being office productivity, communication and visualisation drafting tools.
- A demonstrated strong understanding and practice in safe work compliance in both field and workshop situations.
- Strong demonstration and capability of mechanical tooling and machinery operations.

**Desirable**:

- An understanding of, and demonstratable experience using marine science equipment, such as oceanographic moorings, trawl fishing or deep-water sediment coring systems.
- A licence to operate, and proven experience operating a forklift.
