What is the role?

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the roles within the AFP Forensic Biology Team and the National DNA Program for Unidentified and Missing Persons team.

Forensic Biology team members contribute to the achievement of business, investigation and intelligence outcomes through the provision of specialist forensic (biological and DNA) examinations, analysis and specialist technical skills.

What will you do?

As a Forensic Biology Team Member, you play a pivotal role in assisting to create a supportive culture that respects the perspectives, talents and value of each individual. Consistent with the AFP values, AFP Leadership Philosophy, organisational reform agendas, AFP corporate and business plans and your Performance Development Agreement, the expectation is that you will:
Possess an approach to work which emphasises quality, accuracy and attention to detail
Identify problems and develop solutions both autonomously and through group discussions
Maintain currency in biological evidence recovery, DNA interpretation and statistical analysis expertise through ongoing professional development and learning opportunities
Undertake laboratory techniques including automated DNA extraction, DNA quantitation, DNA amplification and capillary electrophoresis
Prepare accurate records of laboratory analyses using the Forensic Management System
Plan, conduct and coordinate simple and/or complex forensic biology investigations
Assist with the maintenance of the national DNA database
Provide accurate, professional, expert forensic evidence to the courts, investigators and other internal/external stakeholders
Contribute to the maintenance of the Forensic Command’s laboratory accreditation system
Contribute to the maintenance of a safe working environment
Encourage and support innovative thought and solutions, and contribute to collaborative research and development
Performing other duties as required
Essential Requirements

A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
A degree in a relevant scientific discipline, including knowledge in the field of molecular biology
Desirable Requirements

The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
Experience working in a biology or diagnostic laboratory, or experience with laboratory analyses as part of undergraduate coursework and/or student research placements/projects
DNA analysis of forensic samples using standard autosomal and Y-STR profiling systems
Mitochondrial DNA analysis specifically for forensic samples
DNA interpretation and/or reporting of autoso
