**About Questacon**:
Questacon - The National Science and Technology Centre is a division of the Australian Government Department of Industry, Science and Resources. Our Vision is “**a better future for all Australians through engagement with science, technology and innovation**.” We deliver on that vision through our Mission “**to excite and motivate people through inspirational learning experiences**”. The Production and Maintenance Team operates within the Exhibitions Branch, and are responsible for the mechanical resolution, engineering, fabrication and maintenance of Questacon’s interactive exhibitions.
- engineering or trade qualifications, relevant high level technical knowledge and experience in workshop fabrication in either a metals or carpentry related background (or both)
- demonstrated well developed skills in fabricating with a variety of materials such as: metals, plastics, wood and composites. Familiarity with CAD drafting and CAM programming, toolmaking and woodworking would be an advantage
- a willingness to work across different trades and learn new skills.
- demonstrated high level experience in custom orientated production, including a strong background in materials selection, appropriate manufacturing processes, and relevant knowledge and awareness of current and emerging technologies
- ability to work independently, and as a part of a team in an environment with competing priorities and tight deadlines. Demonstrated personal drive, integrity, professionalism and a proven commitment to APS Values, Code of Conduct and Work Health and Safety principles.

**What you will do**:
The Workshop Technician contributes to Questacon’s mission by being part of the team delivering high quality mechanical interactive systems for Questacon’s exhibitions.

As a Workshop Technician at the APS 4 Level you will:

- provide workshop based skills and resources required in the development, fabrication, testing, assessment and repairs of science orientated interactive exhibits for permanent and travelling venues. Supporting high level technical input and ensuring exhibition production and delivery is always of a high quality
- actively participate as a member of the Production Team by working, training, and interacting with members of the Team, and by providing support to the Senior Workshop Supervisor and Production Manager, as well as across Questacon
- assist in the design resolution, choice of materials and fabrication processes associated with exhibit development and maintenance
- assist in the maintenance and general good house-keeping of exhibits, workshop equipment, and the Production Team environment and across Questacon
- support the Production Team in the training and supervision of any Workshop Apprenticeships, Interns, or Work Experience Students
- coordinate with design teams to develop and maintain appropriate levels of working drawings and documentation for Questacon interactive exhibits being produced
- provide out of hours and weekend assistance to the Maintenance Program and or Exhibit installation process if possible when required
- maintain and support appropriate work standards within the production environment including work health and safety, priorities and deadlines.

**Eligibility**:
Prior to commencing, successful applicants will be required to:

- Undergo a ‘Working with Children’ Police Check; and
- Obtain or hold a current registration issued under the _Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011._

**Notes**:
This recruitment process is being used to fill ongoing and non-ongoing APS Level 4 positions.

A merit pool may be established and used to fill future vacancies within 18 months from the date the vacancy was first advertised in the Gazette_. _

The department does currently offer flexible work opportunities for many roles. This vacancy is based at Questacon’s Deakin Workshop in Canberra, which due to operational requirements operates from 7:00am to 3:00pm. Please reach out to the contact officer to discuss this further.
