**Role**:
The Maths Assistant will work under the direction of the teacher to facilitate student learning. This may involve working with all students, with small groups of students or with individual students as required for program delivery.

Key attributes for a Maths Assistant include:

- Proficiency in mathematics
- The capacity to work under direction in a team environment
- Aptitude for assisting students to build knowledge and skills

An Education Support position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the _Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic)_ or its successor. Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee’s position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

**Responsibilities**:
Under the direction of the class teacher, this position will:

- following agreed lesson plans, instruct individuals/ groups of students using support strategies appropriate to the needs of students, providing feedback and liaising with colleagues over problems.
- contribute to planning of teaching and learning for whole class and/or individual students.
- collaborate with teacher to monitor and record learning progress of students.
- contribute to the development of a safe, positive working atmosphere and implement school's policies and procedures.
- supervise tests and assessments as directed by teacher.
- prepare classroom resources

**Location Profile**:
Keilor Downs College is a large single campus secondary school of approximately 1300 students, situated on the north-western edge of suburban Melbourne. Students and staff reflect the many different cultural backgrounds present within the local community.

The School’s Strategic Plan (SSP) 2020 -2023 prioritises “Maximising the achievement and learning growth of every student, particularly in literacy and numeracy”, “Improving student learning engagement and learner agency” and “Improving the social and emotional engagement and wellbeing of every student”.

The college also participates in a local Vocational Education & Training (VET) cluster, to enhance the choices available to students by sharing VET classes, and provides Cert II Hospitality, Cert II Sport & Recreation, and Cert II Building & Construction on site. The latter in a specifically constructed Trade Training Centre (TTC), which is one of three facilities built as a joint project across colleges in the Brimbank VET Cluster.

An emphasis of the college is its strong student support structure with each individual student being known and supported academically and personally. This is achieved by both a House and a Home Group structure. Student engagement and management is based on four vertically structured Houses of Year 7-12 students. Each House has a unique identity and each is resourced with a Principal Class member, House Leader (Leading Teacher), three Student Coordinators and a Secondary Teacher Assistant. Home Group teachers are assigned to each new Year 7 Home Group and follow them through to Year 12. Two SWC’s, a Mental Health Practitioner, a School Nurse, two psychologist, Doctors in School Program, a Careers teacher and MIPs Officer, onsite HeadStart staff and an Industry Engagement Priority Cohorts Coordinator also provide a range of additional supports to students.

Student Leadership is a strong element of the House structure with an extremely active student leadership group, consisting of House Captains, Year Level Leaders, KLA and Co-curricular Program Ambassado
