About Us

Based at the Murdoch University Centre for Computational and Systems Medicine (CCSM) and harnessing the capacity of the Australian National Phenome Centre (ANPC), the role will act as a liaison between technical specialists and the public. It involves conducting daily research activities related to Western Australia premium food products, with a significant focus on managing the day-to-day operation of ongoing human clinical trials.

The ANPC, located in the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, is a world-class facility led by Murdoch University focused on high throughput targeted and exploratory metabolic phenotyping. The centre is the largest dedicated facility for metabolic phenotyping in the world and houses the largest collection of mass spectrometers and nuclear magnetic resonance instruments dedicated to phenomics research.

The Role

Established as part of the Future Food Systems Cooperative Research Centre (FFS-CRC) to connect nutritional quality and composition with health outcomes through nutritional health claims; the Research Officer is a trained operator with experience in the execution of day-to-day research activities in a PC2 certified laboratory.

Residing in The Centre for Computational and Systems medicine (CCSM); you will work closely with technical specialists from the world-leading Australian National Phenome Centre (ANPC) and contribute to the generation of high-fidelity data using mass spectrometers and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers.

Key responsibilities for the role include:

- Establishing routine methodologies for the preparation of various samples, ranging from food origin to clinical origin, in a PC2 certified laboratory.
- Acquisition of data from biofluid and food samples using pipelines already established for MS and NMRs, immunoassays, molecular biology techniques, robotic liquid handlers, etc.
- Ensure equipment are operationalised in compliance with SOPs.
- Perform data quality assurance and statistical analysis to assist Bioinformaticians.
- Assist in the day-to-day operation of ongoing human clinical trials, which includes duties such as recruiting volunteers, conducting screening visits, sample collections and preparations.
- Prepare analytical reports for collaborators and dissemination via publications and presentations.
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of relevant informatics techniques.

What you’ll bring to this role
- Qualifications (Hons or equivalent) in a relevant field.
- Extensive experience and knowledge (3+ years) in the day-to-day operations of a PC2 of analytical laboratory, with a focus on sample collection and preparation of biospecimens of clinical origins or food samples.
- Experienced in analytical chemistry or molecular biology techniques.
- Experienced in conducting human clinical trials and possessing a good understanding of the principles outlined in the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research.
- Ability to communicate analytical strategies to researchers in other fields; with high written and speech skills.
- Knowledge of statistical analysis techniques.
- Experience with large, high-throughput sample workflows.
