About the role We have an opportunity for a Principal Policy Officer to join us on an ongoing basis.
The Principal Policy Officer will work within our Regulation Policy unit within the Regulation and Dispute Services Group. The Regulation Policy unit leads the department's policy function in relation to Consumer Affairs by supporting the implementation of government priorities and commitments including improving financial support and protections for vulnerable consumers, delivering better housing outcomes, and working to ensure fair and safe trading.

**Key Accountabilities of the role include**:

- Providing high quality, authoritative and comprehensive advice to the Minister for Consumer Affairs, Ministerial office, the Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Executives and Senior Officers on policy issues arising in regulation policy and advice
- Managing designated projects and activities to deliver policy reviews, develop evidence-based policy proposals, undertake research and public consultations, and analyse and evaluate public policy options to address consumer and fair-trading issues and deliver on government priorities.
- Reviewing legislation administered by the Regulation Policy business unit, develop and evaluate legislative and other regulatory options and advise on the implications of specific proposals.
- Developing regulations and legislative instruments.
- Preparing or assisting in the preparation of cabinet submissions, Parliamentary documents, reports, briefing and options papers, Legislative Impact Assessments and/or Regulatory Impact Statements and correspondence for a variety of audiences, including responding to letters received by Ministers.

About you
To be considered for the role, you must be able to demonstrate:

- Experience formulating policy and legislation options and advice
- Ability to develop project briefs consistent with the business plan direction
- Experience managing and leading complex policy and/or legislative reform projects
- Experience developing briefs on highly complex policy or legislative issues that provide options for discussion and consideration and will contribute to the development of a set of final options for decision
- Ability to work collaboratively, build relationships and communicate with influence
- A tertiary qualification in law or public policy is desirable
