- SC4 ‘Interaction with the school community’. Demonstrated high level interpersonal skills and communication skills. Demonstrated high level of capability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with students, parents, other employees and the broader school community to focus on student learning, wellbeing and engagement.

SC5 ‘Professional requirements’. Demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate by gaining buy-in and ownership for ideas, gaining agreement to proposals, or involving experts or other third parties to strengthen a case.

**Role**:
The MHWC role differs from allied health wellbeing roles as it is not intended to provide one-to-one counselling to students.

Operating in collaboration with their school and wellbeing team where relevant, the purpose of this role is to:

- **Promote a whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing in students, staff and families**
- Increase school-wide knowledge of mental health and wellbeing and minimise stigma
- Promote a whole school approach to the prevention and promotion of wellbeing in students, staff and families
- Evaluate the suitability of interventions and programs for prevention and promotion of mental health and wellbeing using evidence-based principles
- Seek out and engage with current developments in mental health and wellbeing research and practice
- **Support **teachers and school **staff to **expand their capacity to embed evidence-based mental health strategies, interventions and programs and build mental health literacy to identify and support primary school students with mental health concerns**
- Recognise risk and protective factors for primary school children regarding mental health and wellbeing
- Help staff identify children with mental and wellbeing concerns and discuss support needs with staff and families
- **Support their school to create clear internal and external pathways for referrals for students identified as requiring further mental health assessment and intervention**
- Have a sound knowledge of internal and external referral pathways for primary school students with mental health and wellbeing needs in their context
- Support the school to provide individualised wellbeing support to students who require additional classroom based or out of classroom care, e.g. respite, family liaison, individual support plans
- Understand the specific contribution of each role in the school to the mental health and wellbeing of students and the broader school community
- **Proactively work with and support regional staff, school wellbeing and leadership teams, teachers, parents/carers and other external agencies to coordinate targeted mental health support for primary school students**
- Co-ordinate targeted/individualised support for children with mental health and wellbeing concerns
- Support the school to provide individual wellbeing support to students who require additional classroom based or out of classroom care, e.g. respite, family liaison, individual support plans
- **Advocate for and value student voice and agency in their wellbeing and mental health needs.**
- Follow confidentiality and recording keeping practices when working with children with mental health and wellbeing concerns

**Responsibilities**:
Operating in collaboration with their school, leadership and wellbeing team where relevant, the Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader will:

- Promote a whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing to students, staff and families
- Support teachers and school staff to expand their capacity to embed evidence-based mental health strategies, interventions and programs and build mental health literacy to identify and support primary school students with mental health concerns.
- Collaborate with school staff to inform, influence and provide input into teaching and learning relating to mental health and wellbeing. Provide support to schools staff and classroom teachers to build their capabilities to embed mental health into the classroom.
