**About the Role**
Based in the Vascular Biology and Cell Trafficking Laboratory, the Research Associate will join an international research program supported by a new NHMRC funded project working with an interdisciplinary team of scientists. The overall aim of the project is translational research for multiple myeloma. More specifically, the project focuses on a novel biomarker identified on patients with myeloma that poor prognosis and the development of a new prognostic test.

The Centre for Cancer Biology (CCB) is an alliance between the University of South Australia and CALHN and is co-located with other cancer-focussed researchers within a purpose-built building in Adelaide’s Biotech and Medical Precinct. The CCB studies the fundamental causes of cancer in order to find new ways to prevent and treat the disease and is a recognised hub for innovative science leading to breakthrough therapies.
**Core Responsibilities**
- Contribute to planning of research by:
- Participating in planning sessions
- Offering new ideas on research directions
- Reviewing relevant literature and other sources of information
- Attending seminars and meetings
- Undertaking pilot studies
- Contribute to the execution of research by:
- Actively participating in the production of data with limited freedom to explore possible new methods and directions
- Designing experiments, including appropriate controls, according to the planned aims of the research
- Maintaining daily comprehensive records of work performed and results of studies
- Seeking relevant information from libraries, books and journals, electronic information systems and other sources of information
- Assessing the requirements for laboratory consumables or other appropriate resources required to conduct the studies
- Contribute to the dissemination of new knowledge by:
- Drafting reports, abstracts, scientific papers and other instruments providing accounts of research undertaking and the findings observed
- Attending meetings, seminars and conferences
- Contribute to a safe and ethical working environment by:
- Complying with human ethics, animal ethics, privacy and other appropriate guidelines
- Maintaining confidentiality of research proposals and research findings
- Being familiar with the relevant policy and procedure manuals and acting in compliance with the guidelines contained therein
**Essential Skills and Experience**
- A postgraduate qualification in cell and cancer biology, or related discipline and a minimum of two (2) years of relevant work experience
- Experience in cell culture with cancer cells, in vivo models of blood cancer, gene and protein expression techniques and modulation of protein production in human and mouse cells
- Demonstrated participation in relevant areas of research and knowledge of literature involved in, and laboratory procedures relevant to, the research project/s
- Demonstrated competency in recording, analysing, presenting and disseminating research to stakeholders including the preparation of papers for high quality publications and oral presentations at conferences
- High-level oral, written (including papers and grants) and interpersonal communication skills (including community engagement) and the ability to work both independently and collaborate effectively with others in a multi-disciplinary research environment
