**Division Responsibilities**

The Health Workforce Division works to ensure all Australians have access to high quality

health services through the development of evidence-based policies and programs that

deliver a sustainable, highly trained and well-distributed workforce.

The Division aims to:

- Ensure Australia’s health workforce is well distributed through incentives, regulation

and targeted training
- Fill gaps in the distribution of the workforce, supporting access to health services for

rural Australians through outreach services
- Improve the quality of the health workforce through training programs, policy

settings and support for national regulatory arrangements.

**Branch and Section Responsibilities**

The Health Workforce Data Intelligence Unit (HWDIU) is responsible for creating data-driven

intelligence to support evidence-based reform of Australia’s health workforce. With this

vision in mind, we are committed to creating and nurturing a thriving, data-driven culture to

ensure we use data to its maximum potential.

We consider data essential to our business and critical for innovation, decision making and

successful program management. Working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders, we

are creating an environment where data are better used to drive insights and support

decision-making. With policy and program areas of the department and our colleagues in

State and Territory Health Departments, industry and academia, we intentionally place data

at the heart of everything we do. The HWDIU reports directly to the First Assistant Secretary

of the Health Workforce Division and is led by a Senior Director.

The HWDIU comprises the following sections:

- Geospatial and Systems
- Reporting, Requests and Data Management
- HeaDS UPP, Data Governance and Strategy
- Data Analytics, Supply and Demand Modelling
- Special Projects and Policy Support

Our key activities include:

- Supply and demand modelling of medical specialists to support the National Medical

Workforce Strategy
- Development of a nursing supply and demand model
- Updates and review of geographical classifications such as the Modified Monash

Model
- Maintenance and updates of the District Priority Areas and Districts of Workplace

Shortages
- Development of a method and mechanism to support the distribution of GP trainees

as part of the Workforce Planning and Prioritisation program
- Implementation of the HWD Data Strategy 2023-26
- Data sharing agreements

- Enhancements to the preparation and publication of workforce statistics from the

National Health Workforce Dataset.***

**Key Responsibilities**
- Provide expertise and technical knowledge in spatial areas across a range of

programs or activities and deliver cartographic outputs.
