**Role**:
**Role and Responsibilities**

The student Counsellor works within a team providing comprehensive and integrated framework to respond to the needs of students and their families. There should be an emphasis on prevention and early intervention strategies and approaches through the development of programs, procedures and policies in line with DET and the College. The duties of a stusent counsellor include counselling students whose behaviour, school progress or mental or physical impairment indicate a need for assistance; consulting with parents, teachers and other school personnel to determine the cause of the problems and to implement solutions. They may be required to arrange for medical, psychiatric and other testing that might disclose the cause of difficulties.

As well as attending to the duties required within this ES range, the role includes the following key accountabilities;
Excellent time-management and organisational skills to effectively perform all duties

Provide counselling for students dealing with emotional, social and behavioural issues/concerns.

Advise Wellbeing team members including Learning partners and teachers of strategies that will assist and support students with their learning.

Be familiar with social service agencies in the community so that students and their families can be connected to the appropriate services.

Manage crisis situations as they arise and expect to be on call for such crises.

Liaise with other members of the Wellbeing team in creating individual learning support plans and attendance at student support and disciplinary meetings, providing welfare strategies and serving as an advocate for the students.

Maintain clinical records on their case management services, which includes documenting counselling sessions and other services.

Attend School, Regional or Network or community group meetings as required.

To work within the processes and policies for staff at Craigieburn Secondary College and DET.

To undertake other duties as determined appropriate by the Principal.

Performs and/or supervises tasks that are carried out in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice and school policy. This may include the supervision and coordination of other education support class staff within the work area or educational program. Supervision and coordination would be limited to ensuring routine tasks are performed to required standards. Input into identifying training needs and development of education support class staff within the work area or educational program becomes an important feature at range 2.

Specialised support to achieve specific outcomes is a feature of range 2. Typically this will involve accountability for a single function, (e.g. ensuring data is properly maintained) or the operation of a work area (e.g. managing the day to day operation of a school office) under the direction of the principal or another senior manager.

Provides support to teachers and students that is beyond the routine support provided at education support class Level 1, range 1. Within an educational program assists teachers with the coordination of the support function, such as directing/organising the work of other support staff or providing a specialist support role.

Undertakes medical intervention support tasks or other specialised student/teacher support roles that require specific training that must be updated from time to time.
