The Department of Education is responsible for delivering and regulating state-wide learning and development services to approximately one-third of all Victorians across the early childhood, school education, and training and skills sectors. The Department is also one of Victoria's biggest employers, with approximately 80,000 teaching staff and around 5000 public service employees.
The Legal Division provides highly valued legal services across the Department's portfolios which include early childhood and schools. In doing so, Legal Division provides direct, practical and strategic legal advice to over 1500 government schools supporting approximately 1 million Victorian students.
About the role - Fixed term, full time to 24 May 2024
The primary responsibility of this role is to work with and support the management of the Legal Division and Workplace and Education Law branch in litigation managed by the NLR unit in accordance with the Department's values and objectives.
The Principal Lawyer will lead and manage strategically significant negligence claims and litigation brought against the Department.
The role requires a strategic and highly experienced litigation lawyer with a sensitive and compassionate approach given the nature of the claims and reputational risks for the Department. The sucessful candidiate will also have excellent communication, project management and stakeholder management skills.
