Why this role matters
The Salvation Army Australia’s Family Violence Stream provides a wide range of services around the country to support women and women with children impacted by family and domestic violence. We offer refuge, children’s and parenting services, counselling, support, men’s programs, accommodation and advice to women and children who are experiencing, or who have experienced, family violence.
Samaritan Women and Children Services (SWACS) will work as one team with a person-centred, safe and coordinated approach to service delivery to ensure the best outcome for all who seek our assistance.
As a Family Support Worker you will provide support to women and their accompanying children who are experiencing domestic and family abuse and /or experiencing homelessness to achieve housing stability, improve social inclusion and be equipped for participation in the wider community.
The role you could play
- Offer appropriate and high-quality support to individuals that are currently experiencing family and domestic abuse or at risk of homelessness in a client centred supportive manner, including relationship building through motivational interviewing techniques, linking to community support, advocacy / upholding of client rights, ability to listen and encourage residents to achieve their goals
- Conduct comprehensive face to face intake into the crisis service
- Communicate to case managers information for appropriate support as per the four response methods guidelines (crisis/transitional response, rapid re-housing response, early intervention and prevention response or intense support only response)
- Ensure service orientation is conducted for all service users
What you will bring
- Diploma in Community Services, Social Work or related disciplines
- Current NSW Driver’s license and Current Senior First Aid certificate- Demonstrated working knowledge of the community services sector in NSW with a specific emphasis on
- family/domestic violence and homelessness - inclusive of issues, trends, resources and services
- Strong problem solving, decision making and evaluation skills especially in terms of risk of harm or risk to resident
- High level of interpersonal communication, including advocacy skill
- Demonstrated ability to deal with unpredictable situations and behaviour
- Solid level of computer literacy (MS Office, Outlook, CIMS and SAMIS systems)
- A Working with Children Check
- A willingness to undergo a National Police Check
