About the Program

Are you passionate about advancing childhood cancer research? Join our dedicated team at the Children’s Cancer Centre (CCC) Biospecimen Service, a vital component of Professor David Eisenstat’s Neuro-oncology group at MCRI. Established in 2014, our hospital-integrated open-access resource is committed to unravelling the complexities of childhood malignancy.

Managed by Dr Louise Ludlow and coordinated by the skilled Elena Fernandez, our program boasts a rich retrospective collection of biospecimens representing various paediatric cancer types. From offering bespoke prospective collections for research and clinical trials to operating a 24/7 processing service, we are at the forefront of innovative research in the field.

Position Overview

As a crucial member of our team, the Laboratory Technician will receive and process diverse human biospecimens, including surgically resected tumour specimens, blood, bone marrow, and fluids, following established protocols. Daily tasks encompass processing biospecimens for biobanking, clinical trials, and prospective research studies. Proficiency in data entry using Open Specimen is a key requirement.

Attention to detail is paramount to ensure accurate processing, storage, and timely handover of samples to collaborating departments or researchers. The ability to maintain high standards and work efficiently during periods of stress and high-volume workload is essential. Working hours are from 9 am to 5 pm, with some flexibility required during breaks to uphold sample integrity.

This role reports to CCC Biospecimen Service Manager, Dr Louise Ludlow, and Coordinator, Elena Fernandez. It is initially a 3-month position, followed by a 12-month contract, aligning with our pending funding request from July 1, 2024, onwards.

**Your responsibilities include**:
Process biospecimens using established protocols for clinical use, clinical trial enrolment or research purposes
Retrieve, prepare and provide biospecimens to relevant personnel for clinical use, clinical trial enrollment and research under the supervision of the manager and coordinator
Perform data entry of patient/sample details as required using Open Specimen
Ensure reagents are stocked including preparation of buffers and clinical trial materials
Storage of samples in freezers and liquid nitrogen tanks

**About you**:
Certificate or Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent.
Experience with routine laboratory practices and procedures
Ability to work independently as well as within a team with a strong work ethic
Ability to work to a high standard and speed during times of stress and high-volume workload
Able to manage time effectively, adequately prioritise workload, identify and have logical problem-solving skills
