**What’s on Offer**:
The Biosecurity & Food Safety team of the NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) is looking for a Technical Officer to be part of the Sheep Ectoparasite Insecticide Resistance laboratory working with the Australian Sheep Blowfly, _Lucilia cuprina_.**About the Project**:
Lucilia cuprina, the Australian Sheep Blowfly, is responsible for the majority of flystrike which occur on sheep in Australia. Insecticides are used to prevent or control existing flystrike. This external parasite of sheep has developed resistance to a number of insecticide groups. The insecticide resistance profiles of populations of flies from across Australia are determined. Sheep producers submit maggot samples which are reared and tested via bioassay to determine the insecticide resistance profile of the population which is conveyed back to the submitter.

**What You’ll** Do**:

- Undertake various assigned laboratory tasks including:

- Working within an environment that includes decomposing organics and potentially offensive odours which are necessary for the successful culture of maggots and blowflies.
- Preparing insecticide solutions and bioassays substrates. Performing bioassays and recording results.
- Undertaking routine culture tasks, cleaning laboratory equipment, washing insect culture material & keeping the insectary clean & tidy;
- Working with a seasonal pest means work outside of core business hours may be required.
- Maintaining data and records, performing data analysis
- Working independently, adhering to culture timetables and procedures, performing bioassays to produce strain specific data according to a timetable, ability to meet milestones and liaise with stakeholders.
- Maintain a high level of quality control.
- Ensuring laboratory safety and relevant testing protocols are maintained and followed

**What You’ll Have**:

- a degree in biological/agricultural science, TAFE Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques (or equivalent) in accordance with the Crown Employees (NSW Department of Industry) Technical Staff Award
- entomological and livestock handling experience and a chemical handling certification will be an advantage
- NSW Drivers License and the capacity to attend work at the EMAI site without reliance on public transport

- familiarity with computerised record management systems, word processing and spreadsheet software
- a demonstrable understanding of Laboratory quality assurance
- a high work standard and pride in your work
