What is the role?

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Legislative Reform Team Member.

The AFP Legislative Reform Team leads the AFP’s engagement on law reform, including:
Responding to emerging policy matters relating to crime and policing
Engaging with operational policing areas in the AFP to understand operational challenges that relate to law reform
Reviewing draft Bills and reports on legislation, and coordinating across the AFP to ensure a whole-of-agency approach to law reform issues
Researching legal and policy issues and contributing to the development of policy proposals
Preparing briefing material to support AFP senior executive attendance at parliamentary hearings and meetings relating to law reform, and
Supporting enterprise-wide implementation of Bills and other reforms.

You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?

In the Legislative Reform team you will have the opportunity to develop your professional experience across a range of work tasks including stakeholder engagement, learning programs, policy development, briefing executive officers, brief writing and more.

Under guidance from Team Leaders, Band 5 members in the Legislative Reform team will:
Support the development, passage and coordination of implementation of legislative reform relevant to the operations of the AFP
Support and develop AFP’s response to law reform-related reviews and inquiries
Support parliamentary committees (including submissions, responses to questions on notice and government responses)
Provide general policy advice to internal stakeholders on law reform related matters, and
Provide strategic and policy advice in relation to the broader environment in which the AFP is operating, and the context in which law reform decisions are being made (including competing issues, which will be considered by policy and law makers).
Essential Requirements
A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one

Desirable Requirements

Demonstrated experience working in a fast paced work environment and agility to respond to emerging priorities under guidance
Conceptual and analytical skills.

Although not a requirement, this role may be of interest to a person with a law or paralegal background, experience working in a public service policy role, or qualifications in criminology or political science.

A merit list will also be created for future vacancies within the Legislative Reform Team and across the Strategy and Performance Office that arise over the next 12 months.
