**Council Overview**

Strathfield Council (Council) is a medium sized Council located in Sydney’s Inner West. The area of the Council comprises approximately 14 square kilometres and has an estimated population of 46,000 residents, which is growing at 2.5-3% annually. Based on NSW Government projections, the population will increase to over 80,000 by 2036.

**About the Opportunity**

To undertake this position, the following responsibilities and duties are entailed as follows:

- Deliver quality advice on matters pertaining to employee relations, industrial relations and general people management. This includes providing support to managers and employees alike, having regard to appropriate processes and achieving an outcome suitable for both Council and all parties involved in a timely manner.
- Coach and empower managers, team leaders and supervisors to operate in alignment with Council’s values, policies, procedures and people strategy. Ensure guidance is provided to build a high level of knowledge throughout the workplace.
- Assist the Senior Coordinator, People and Culture with investigations into allegations, breaches and disputes. This includes providing administrative support when investigations are escalated externally.
- Influence and negotiate with union officials, as directed by and with support from the Senior Coordinator, People and Culture and Manager, People and Culture.
- Work on continuously improving the People and Culture offering, by identifying gaps and subsequent recommendations in policies, guidelines and procedures and being activity involved in change projects.
- Partner with managers, team leaders and supervisors on recruitment and selection activities including reviewing position descriptions, undertaking job evaluations, collaborating on strategising said activities and participating in interview panels as necessary.
- Work closely with other members of the People and Culture team to ensure a comprehensive delivery in services to all Directorates across Council, including human resources, industrial relations, workplace health and safety, workers compensation, learning and development, organisational development and recruitment.
- Proactively assist with managing the successful introduction of People and Culture initiatives, championing buy-in and their success within Council. Be an active project team member across several projects.
- Undertake any other reasonable tasks as directed by management and within alignment to the skills and abilities of the position incumbent.

**About you**
- A degree in Human Resource Management or similar (required)
- Current NSW Drivers Licence with no restrictions (required)
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) including the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across all levels of Council.
- Proven experience in influencing and negotiating individuals to achieve a beneficial outcome when problem solving, with a focus on timely resolutions.
- Ability to interpret and provide sound advice on industrial awards, relevant employment legislation and Council’s policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated knowledge of human resource functions and Australian employment law provisions.
- High-level attention to detail with excellent written skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment, with a commitment to providing high quality advice and services to Council employees.
- Excellent organisational skills that enable a proactive approach to undertaking duties and ensure that matters are dealt with in a prompt manner. This includes the ability to prioritise and autonomously evaluate tasks when presented with competing deadlines.
- A demonstrated commitment to building positive workplace culture and championing health and safe workplace.
- Extensive experience in a comparable role (required), preferably within Local Government (desirable)
