**About the Role**

**The Academic Specialist will report to the Materials Characterisation and Fabrication (MCFP) leader and will be responsible for developing and managing the mass cytometry (CyTOF) node at MCFP, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, University of Melbourne. The MCFP is a research infrastructure platform that brings together instrumentation to support materials science and engineering. The position provides technical support for key infrastructure on an open access basis within the materials science, nanobiotechnology and engineering areas of the University.**:
This position is primarily responsible for the provision of exceptional service and technical support for the CyTOF, including the operation of the CyTOF for researchers, maintenance of the CyTOF, the provision of expert cytometric advice, development of research projects and collaborations, the development of equipment, reagents and techniques. The appointee will be actively involved in the oversight and maintenance of the CyTOF instrumentation, high-end training of new users, encouraging collaborative research projects associated with specialist instrumentation, fostering partnerships with external scientists and organisations and engagement in research projects. The appointee will also provide specialised advice and support in relation to the planning for equipment upgrades and new instrumentation.

**Your responsibilities will include**:

- To establish and provide technical training and support for CyTOF users including the production of user documentation and protocols for equipment operation and develop strategies for user training, consistent with current MCFP policies, consistent with current MCFP polices
- Provide high level expertise, advice and assistance to researchers to undertake research projects utilising the CyTOF and working with the researchers and other platform staff to help develop integrated approaches to research projects
- Collaborate with researchers on specific projects of mutual interest.
- Liaise with other technical staff, research groups and external collaborators to ensure user community development, establishing and maintaining positive relationships with user groups and other stakeholders.
- Monitor and manage use of the facilities by collaborators and visitors to ensure efficient and cost-effective use of Platform resources

**You will also have**:

- Completion of a PhD and post-doctoral research experience in a relevant discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in the operation, optimisation and maintenance of fluorescence microscopy equipment
- Excellent ability in analysing data, problem solving and maintaining accurate research records
- Demonstrated ability to articulate research through presentation in a public forum including conferences. Excellent oral and written communication skills suitable for a variety of audiences
