**The Role**
The Strategic Communication Branch has multi-disciplinary communication teams embedded in every Group and Service in Defence. They provide end-to-end communication support to their Group or Service - from strategic planning through to execution, reactive and proactive media engagement, content development, social media and brand management. This recruitment round will be used to fill positions embedded in all Groups and Services - you can read a short description of their roles and responsibilities on the Defence website. Media and Communications Managers contribute to the delivery of Ministerial, whole-of-government and Defence objectives. They are a source of trusted strategic communication advice and a valued partner to achieve communication objectives for Defence.

Key responsibilities of Media and Communication Managers include:

- Providing high-level, strategic communication advice to senior leaders, including senior military officers and senior executive service officers.
- Leading and supporting a small team.
- Developing communication strategies and associated media products, including talking points, media releases, social media content, fact sheets etc.
- Executing public affairs plans, including coordinating with senior stakeholders and escorting media at events.
- Anticipating and responding to media enquiries, developing timely holding statements and talking points in response to incidents.
- Maintaining a detailed understanding of your Group or Service’s activities and contributing to planning and forecasting events and communication opportunities for our Ministers and Executive.
- Leading and collaborating on organisational-wide communication outputs.
- Identifying communication risks and opportunities to maintain and promote Defence’s reputation and interests in line with communication priorities.

The Strategic Communication Branch operates in a dynamic environment with emerging priorities.

We are seeking experienced strategic thinkers and communication specialists with an interest in Defence issues. Media and Communication Managers are required to work independently to proactively identify issues and adjust media and communications products and activities accordingly.
- High level analytical skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Leadership ability, including the ability to lead peers and stakeholders, manage upwards and be accountable for quality outcomes.
- The ability to develop and cultivate positive, collaborative working relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
- The ability to anticipate and respond to diverse stakeholder needs and expectations, including Ministers and members of the Defence Senior Leadership Group, making logical connections of emerging issues across the enterprise.
- The ability to respectfully challenge the status quo to innovate and improve outcomes.
- Initiative, flexibility and a demonstrated capacity to solve problems under pressure.
