The Office of Public Prosecutions has a rewarding opportunity for an experienced Solicitor to join our Higher Court Appeals team as a Principal Solicitor.
The Higher Court Appeals team manage appeals to the Court of Appeal, High Court, and appeals and reviews in the common law division of the Supreme Court. The team also reviews sentences and provides advice to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The position is Melbourne based, however occasional regional travel may be required. A vehicle and overnight accommodation are provided as required.
Flexible working arrangements, including hybrid working options are available.

**About the Role**:

- Ensure that appeals and reviews are competently, efficiently and expeditiously prepared, that suitable counsel is briefed in a timely manner and that appeals are properly presented before the appellate courts.
- Contribute to the professional development of OPP staff by providing formal and informal mentoring of junior staff, and preparing and delivering training as required.
- Provide leadership support to the Manager, Higher Court Appeals by undertaking policy and project work and representing the team or OPP in a variety of forums (internal meetings, user groups, workshops, and internal and external committees) as required.
- Extensive knowledge of the criminal law and its processes, and considerable experience in the criminal jurisdiction, including the appellate jurisdiction of the Court of Appeal.
- High level conceptual and analytical skills, and excellent written communication skills including preparing high level and technical advice.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, balancing competing priorities effectively and producing high quality work within tight time constraints.
