The primary purpose of the Research Assistant is to assist in the processing of human biological samples for an observation cohort study of COVID-19 in our regional area within Professor Athan’s laboratory.
**Your key responsibilities will include**:
- Process human biological samples, including blood, serum, plasma, and tissue samples and bacterial samples, following established protocols.
- Maintain accurate records of sample collection, processing, and storage.
- Perform flow cytometry experiments, including sample preparation, instrument setup, data acquisition, and analysis.
- Assist with the preparation of laboratory reagents for processing/experiments.
- Conduct ELISAs and Bioplex assays to measure biomarkers and analyse immune responses.
- Draft presentations and research reports, review and edit research documents in consultation with relevant research staff.
- Assist in organising meetings, presentations, preparation of reports, and maintenance of databases and administrative systems.
- As a member of a project team, assist in the design of laboratory experiments, techniques, and protocols.
- Perform routine logging and/or testing of samples.
- Order and manage inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents.
- Collaborate with other team members and participate in lab meetings and scientific discussions.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the PI and Project Manager
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and ethical regulations for human sample handling and data privacy.
**To be successful, you’ll have**:
- Qualifications and experience_
- Completion of a degree (Honours) or post-graduate qualifications in science, biomedical science or other relevant discipline and/or other relevant qualifications and experience
- Familiarity with human biological sample processing techniques, such as centrifugation, aliquoting, and cryopreservation.
- Extensive hands-on experience with flow cytometry, including sample preparation, and operation of FACS
- Proficiency in performing ELISAs and Bioplex assays, including sample preparation, plate coating and detection
- Strong knowledge of data management and analysis techniques, including experience with software such as Excel, REDCap, or similar tools.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail for accurate data recording and sample tracking.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a collaborative research team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical issues.
- Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and adherence to ethical guidelines.
