Canberra, Australia Australian Electoral Commission Full time

**Agency Purpose**

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established by the Australian Government to maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services, and targeted education and public awareness programs.

**The AEC’s values and commitments**

The AEC values and commitments are an essential component of our operating environment and frame how AEC staff work. The AEC's focus is on electoral integrity through the values of quality, agility and professionalism.

**The Team**

The Defending Democracy Unit (DDU) plays a central role in upholding the integrity of elections by influencing advancements in Australia’s response to electoral interference. The overall aim of the team is to shape and support the AEC’s capability to counter and respond to any instance of interference in electoral systems and processes.

The Legal Services Branch is a small and dynamic team that provides legal advice and conducts investigations to ensure the integrity of Commonwealth electoral systems and processes.

The Legal Services Branch is headed by the Chief Legal Officer and is divided into three sections: Corporate Law, Electoral Law and Regulatory Law. There would be opportunities for an applicant to have the opportunity work across all three teams.

The Branch manages legal advice, dispute resolution and litigation, investigations, and legislative development for the AEC. The Branch also has an active role supporting and increasing capabilities across the AEC through training and guidance. The Branch is looking to create a talent pool to fill various positions in the branch which would be suitable for law students and/or recent law graduates.

**The Opportunity**

This is an opportunity to work in an increasingly essential and evolving space within the Defending Democracy Unit (DDU) as a paralegal, alongside the creation of a merit pool for future opportunities in the Legal Services Branch.

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Paralegal with an interest in supporting the AEC before, during and after a federal election or referendum. You will have an understanding of legal processes, such as litigation, regulatory work, statutory obligations and procurement to support the AEC.

As a paralegal within the DDU, you will support the administration of the Electoral Integrity Assurance Taskforce (which consists of federal government agencies that provide advice and expertise within their remit, on a broad range of issues within the Australian electoral environment as a response to threats to our democracy).

You will support the coordination, recordkeeping, and reporting of advice to internal and external stakeholders, departmental heads, statutory appointees and parliamentary committees as required regarding matters that fall within the remit of the EIAT. You will also support the AEC’s fraud control team, including through engagement with enforcement agencies.

To be successful in this role you will strive to gain sound understanding of the role and responsibilities of the AEC and have the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.

You will also be able to undertake work that is moderately complex to complex in nature and operate under limited direction. You may perform research and analysis work and undertake procedural, administrative support or operational tasks.

To excel you’ll have:

- Experience working in a team and a demonstrated ability to work with others to achieve outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience as a strong communicator with the ability to develop and maintain internal and external stakeholder relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to provide accurate and timely advice to a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven ability to provide quality research and analysis to contribute to objectives, including meeting the agency’s statutory obligations, within tight deadlines.
- An attention of detail and experience managing databases and recordkeeping.

**Eligibility**
- AEC employees must be Australian citizens.
- Any person who is, and seen to be active in political affairs, and intends to publicly carry on this activity, may compromise the strict neutrality of the AEC and cannot be considered.
- Applicants are required to consent to, undergo, obtain and maintain a character clearance.
- Applicants are required to consent to, undergo, obtain and maintain the security clearance required for this role.
