Laboratory Safety Officer

**Job Description**:
An excellent opportunity is available for a Laboratory Safety Officer to join the Laboratory Operations department at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute.

About the position

The Laboratory Safety Officer is an advice and support role working with the Institute Safety Team to ensure compliance with legislation involving biological agents and chemicals in research and with providing information, advice and training to institute staff.

This position will work with the Laboratory Operations team and staff across the broader institute to develop and execute training modules, policies and procedures relevant to laboratory safety. In addition, this role will review and develop relevant documentation and assist with regular inspections of institute laboratories and facilities. This role will work with the WEHI Safety Team as a member of Laboratory Operations.

The successful applicant will have a working understanding of laboratory research, experience with laboratory and more specifically chemical safety in compliance with the Australian Standards for Laboratory Safety (AS/NZS 2243), a working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 2004 (Vic) and demonstrate a proficiency in the management of online forms, spreadsheets and databases.

Knowledge and Skills- Tertiary qualification in chemical or biological sciences and relevant laboratory experience- A working knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation and regulatory controls applicable to Australian laboratories- Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver effective training material to a broad range of people, including research staff, students, managers and contractors- Proficiency in the utilisation of management databases, online training and assessment tools, software, etc.

Desirable- Experience in the management and training related to cryogenic facilities- Familiarity with safety and risk management systems- Experience in critical incident management

Terms of appointment

This is an ongoing role in a full-time capacity. Salary is Professional Services Employee Level 7 ($94,222 - $101,996). Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
