**Procurement Specialist (Ranger Closure)**
- ** Permanent position**
- **Key driver for our procurement support to Ranger closure project**
- **Based in Brisbane, with some site visits to Ranger closure site expected.**
**Focus**
Ranger is a dynamic closure and rehabilitation project aimed at restoring the mine site and processing facilities in line with current closure plans. Rio Tinto and Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) signed a Management Services Agreement for Rio Tinto to manage all aspects of the rehabilitation of Ranger, including project management and execution of all rehabilitation activities from June 2024 onwards.
Currently, closure work is led by Rio Tinto Major Projects with guidance from Rio Tinto Closure. Procurement support is shared between Rio Tinto
Procurement (RTP) and Major Projects, with each team managing different spend areas, although in a state of evolution. Together, they are working closely to optimise expenditure throughout the life of the rehabilitation activities.
We are seeking a skilled Procurement Specialist to join this critical initiative. In this role, you will work closely with Major Projects, RTP, and the broader Ranger Closure team to develop a deep understanding of current contracts and future work packages. You will create tailored procurement and contract strategies to meet the unique needs of the Ranger project. This position offers a rare opportunity to take a category-focused approach to site expenditure while supporting both operational and sustaining capital business requirements.
**About the role**
This is a Specialist level role, offering a rare career opportunity with significant learning and development potential. The procurement processes are a hybrid of RTP and Major Projects, reflecting the shared responsibility for spend management. The role is dynamic and will evolve over time, with responsibilities adapting to the changing needs of the Ranger project.
In addition to typical sourcing responsibilities, this position demands a proactive and strategic approach to identifying spend areas where value can be delivered and executing those opportunities. Additionally, the role involves managing capital expenditures, further broadening the scope of responsibilities.
The position also stands out for its extensive interfaces, given the collaborative nature of procurement support shared between RTP and Major Projects. This complexity introduces challenges, such as shifting priorities, processes, responsibilities, deadlines, and budgets, making it a highly engaging and rewarding role for a motivated professional.
**Key Responsibilities**
Reporting to the RTP Closure Business Partner and working in close collaboration with the Major Projects Manager Contracts and Procurement, the Procurement Specialist will:
- Foster a close working relationship with the Major Projects team to ensure a “one-procurement” approach to optimizing expenditure across the life of the Ranger Project.
- Gain a full understanding of existing categories, contracts and their scopes to identify potential gaps or areas for improvement.
- Collaborate with the Ranger Project team to develop clear procurement and contracting requirements over the next 3 years.
- Drive a culture across our team and supplier base of continuous improvement to ensure sustainable quality, process, and cost reduction outputs.
- Design appropriate contracting strategies that align with project objectives, including key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to ensure success.
- Develop specific strategies for Indigenous and Traditional owner suppliers in close partnership with CSP team and consistent with strategies being implemented by the Local/Sustainable Procurement division.
- Execute the contracting strategies, managing the tendering process and ensuring compliance with Rio Tinto's procurement policies.
**About You**
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Proven experience in procurement, category and/or contract management, ideally within a mining or large-scale industrial project environment.
- Strong understanding of contract lifecycle management and the ability to develop and implement effective procurement strategies.
- A proactive and collaborative approach to problem-solving, with strong communication and negotiation skills.
- Ability to deal with changing priorities, and work in environment where role responsibilities and procurement processes (hybrid of RTP and Major Projects) are evolving and changing.
- Ability to manage multiple business requirements and deal with complex situations, with efficient prioritisation skills.
- Experience and understanding of Indigenous procurement and related business development practices.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work across multiple teams and departments.
- Knowledge of project closure or rehabilitation will be highly regarded.
**What we offer**
- A work environment where safety is always the number one
