**The Role**
This is an exciting opportunity to work within Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) and be part of the Australian Governments lead agency dedicated to providing science and technology support for the country’s Defence and security needs.

The successful applicant will be accountable for:

- Allocating resources, setting work area priorities, managing workflows and developing strategies for radiation safety across DSTG.
- Evaluating outcomes from assurance activities and using professional expertise to guide, mentor and support DSTG staff in relation to radiation safety.
- Providing strategic guidance and leadership supporting radiation safety appointed S&T staff within DSTG.
- Leading strategies to assist to reduce risk for those research staff who are required to engage with controlled radiation sources, and who may be controlled persons under the legislation.
- Ensuring that the DSTG Radiation Safety Management Program is established and maintained in accordance with Defence policy, including ARPANSA reporting obligations.
- Provide expert advice on the life cycle elements of Radiation Management within the research setting including, acquisition, storage, handling and disposal.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders and representing DSTG on the Defence Radiation Working Groups and Committees.
- Work collaboratively with occupational health professionals and hazard specialists.
- Provide leadership for the DSTG Radiation Safety Advisory Panel and promote consultation.
- Providing expertise for investigating and reporting on any incidents or issues which involve radiation.
- Assess and evaluate specialist work health and safety strategy, initiatives, projects, policies and procedures to establish best practices and recommend courses of action for radiation safety within DSTG.

- Development and implementation of the Outstanding Research Infrastructure Powering Innovation pillar, a major component of the More Together: Defence Science and Technology Strategy 2030

Defence innovation, science and technology compliance, assurance and sovereignty through complex research safety, research security, workforce capability and talent and scientific resource management RTO also provides specialised research enabling capabilities to other groups and services with Defence, the Australian Intelligence community, our allies and/or our partners in industry and academia. The Research Safety (RS) Directorate provides highly specialised, targeted, professional advice and support for Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing required by a complex Defence research environment.

This includes:

- Work Health Safety (WHS) safety enabling support required to achieve research outcomes.
- Assurance and performance reporting to support the due diligence obligations of the Chief Defence Scientist (CDS) and Leadership team
- Leadership and support for the DSTG Research Safety Officer Network in the delivery of complex research safety enabling support
- Development and maintenance of systems and processes in alignment with Defence
- Provision of internal and external reporting to inform research safety matters
- Hazard specific, specialist alliance to support research outcomes.
