At Jacobs, we're challenging today to reinvent tomorrow by solving the world's most critical problems for thriving cities, resilient environments, mission-critical outcomes, operational advancement, scientific discovery and cutting-edge manufacturing, turning abstract ideas into realities that transform the world for good.

Your impact

When it comes to environmental consulting, we see the world as our greatest resource. That's why clients trust Jacobs to help solve their most complex environmental challenges and opportunities. We partner with government agencies, municipalities, private sector companies and leading environmental organisations to deliver proven industry expertise on new infrastructure, sustainability and environmental initiatives around the globe. With a strong pipeline of work in Eastern Australian & New Zealand, we currently have an exciting opportunity in Chatswood for a Senior Environmental Scientist to join our Confluence Water team.

Confluence Water, a Ventia, Downer and Jacobs joint venture, is one of three consortia delivering services under Sydney Water's Partnering for Success program. Confluence Water delivers design, construction, maintenance and facilities management services in Sydney Water's North region, which stretches from Sydney Harbour to the Hawkesbury River and includes the Hills Shire. This solid Program provides our team with career opportunities, signature projects and a diversity of invigorating work.

As a Senior Environmental Scientist / Engineer within the Confluence Water program in the Contaminated Land Assessment and Remediation Section, you will take an active role in leading the delivery of projects. This will include technical guidance for more junior staff in supporting the successful execution of field sampling programs and contamination assessment report writing. You will seek to provide mentoring to more junior staff in relation to the broad skills required of a consultant, both technical and softer skills. You will take an active role in business development, responsible for building client relationships that secure repeat work and new work that supports your own personal pipeline as well as that of others in the team. More specifically, this role will include the following tasks that will be performed with support from other members of the team as appropriate

  • Planning and execution of moderately complex projects. You will provide technical guidance to support others on such projects. You may also perform project management and client-facing roles where appropriate. You will be supported by senior technical and project delivery leaders and you will support more junior members of the team
  • Preparation and implementation of key environmental and contamination management documents.
  • You will have good knowledge of the regulatory framework and technical elements of the contaminated land sector within NSW, and be able to apply this knowledge to support the delivery of construction works within Confluence Water
  • You will lead simple and moderately complex pursuits as appropriate and provide support as a bid team member for the pursuit of more complex opportunities
  • You will collaborate with other project support teams, stakeholders and delivery partners to help deliver successful project outcomes for Confluence Water and you will support the broader business by providing informal leadership.

Here's what you'll need

You'll need a tertiary qualification in either Environmental Science/Engineering, Geology or Hydrogeology but just as important will be your personal attributes. You'll be as committed as we are to improving the world we live in, seizing the environmental challenges that we all face and coming up with solutions that will benefit generations to come.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, Geology, Earth Sciences with professional or consultancy experience
  • Work experience in consulting is advantageous, particularly within the field of contaminated land assessment, or having had any prior involvement in preparing technical reports.
  • An appreciation of other environmental consultancy disciplines e.g., ecology, hydrogeology, hydrology, soil science, and cultural heritage would be advantageous.
  • Competency using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to produce maps and drawings would also be an advantage, although in-house training can be provided to help develop your skills in this area.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and familiarity with videoconferencing practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and an appetite to learn and develop technical skills relevant to contaminated land assessment
