Remote Sensing Scientist (Plant Phenotyping) – Gordonvale / Cairns

The Remote Sensing Scientist is responsible for developing and applying remote sensing techniques to measure and analyse sugarcane crop traits. This role will contribute to projects in plant phenomics and offer opportunities to work across multiple scientific disciplines, including remote sensing, data science, and plant physiology.

About the Role

The Remote Sensing Scientist develops and applies remote sensing techniques to measure and analyse sugarcane crop traits, contributing to plant phenomics projects and interdisciplinary research.

Key Responsibilities
Your Requirements
Essential
  • Experience collecting agricultural remote sensing data using platforms such as multispectral and hyperspectral sensors.
  • Proficiency in processing remote sensing data (multispectral, hyperspectral) and using GIS and photogrammetry software (e.g., QGIS, Pix4D, ENVI).
  • Strong programming skills in Python or R, with experience in image analysis, machine learning, and statistical methods.
  • Experience in field data collection for phenomics validation.
  • Proven scientific publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Willingness to conduct fieldwork in hot and humid conditions.
Desirable
  • Experience in developing and deploying remote sensing workflows.
  • Knowledge of plant physiology, agronomy, and plant breeding.
  • Research experience specifically in sugarcane.
Qualifications
  • Masters or PhD in relevant fields such as agricultural remote sensing, precision agriculture, plant phenomics, or plant physiology, or equivalent research experience.
  • A current driver's license to operate SRA vehicles.
Further Information

This is a two-year fixed-term position, with potential intra- and inter-state travel.
