About This Opportunity

Join Professor Tim Miller's team as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Research Officer in Human-Centered AI at The University of Queensland. This is a hands-on opportunity to shape the future of decision support tools that balance human control with scalable artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. Led by Professor Tim Miller, TIET-UQ Chair of Data Science, this newly established lab aims to empower expert decision-makers by harnessing AI to tackle real-world challenges. The lab emphasizes real-world impact, human-centered design, and a culture of collaboration, respect, and wellbeing. This position invites you to collaborate with Tim to create the vision and direction of the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities

• Research: Produce quality and impactful research in human-centered AI. Publish in high-quality outlets (e.g., AAAI, IJCAI, NeurIPS, CVPR, EMNLP, CHI, CSCW, FAccT, or similar). Establish and manage a research program in human-centered decision support using AI; collaborate on projects; seek funding; use best-practice methodologies; and participate in project discussions.
• Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise students, recruit and manage personnel, provide performance feedback and training, resolve conflicts, ensure correct remuneration and benefits.
• Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative tasks, support colleagues, and uphold university values.

About You

• Completion or near completion of a PhD in human-centered AI or a closely related area.
• Evidence of human-centered AI publications in reputed refereed journals and presentations at conferences such as AAAI, IJCAI, NeurIPS, CVPR, EMNLP, CHI, CSCW, FAccT, or similar.
• Experience in conducting human behavioral experiments or human-centered field studies.
• Demonstrated experience in machine learning (e.g., deep learning for image processing, NLP/LLMs).
• Demonstrated software engineering/development abilities and use of software engineering tools.
