About the role

We are looking to hire a talented Associate Director - Data Engineering to join our cohesive leadership team. This is a full-time role based in Sydney.

You will help design and deliver a program of data-focused engineering projects for our globally distributed client base. Simple Machines aims to ensure our clients get the most out of their data by designing and building modern data platforms, engineering data-powered software applications and products, and enabling data-driven business use-cases.

Responsibilities
  • Partner with New Business and Client Partners through the pre-sales, sales, and account management process. Respond to client requirements and identify opportunities for client success and continual improvement through their data, and our consulting and engineering.
  • Facilitate workshops and client meetings to understand client needs and convert them into technical responses (proposal, solution design, architecture, road maps, and more).
  • Partner with internal and external engineering teams, delivery leads and the broader business as Technical Leader for consulting, architecture, integration, and software delivery engagements.
  • Participate as a member of the Leadership Team, identifying opportunities for business improvement and taking ownership of workstreams as part of the business improvement plan.
  • Mentor and lead technical teams, including Technical Leads.
  • Stay current with core relevant technologies and concepts that apply to modern data platforms and data-driven use-cases.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with Vendor Partners (AWS, GCP, Confluent, Lightbend, Immuta, Databricks).
  • Engage with Client Partners to improve and develop new product offerings.
  • Partner with Talent & Culture to improve and develop internal education programs.

The technology experience we're looking for

We specialise in architecting modern data platforms, enabling use-cases on top of these and designing and building data-driven software applications and products. We are looking for thought leadership and deep expertise in these practice areas.

Ideally you will have experience in the following areas:

  • Architecting contemporary enterprise data platforms
  • Software architecture and development for data-driven applications
  • Familiarity with event-driven design and real-time systems (Kafka, Kinesis, etc.)
  • Contemporary cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Modern DevOps practices (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Contemporary data processing technologies (Spark, Flink, others) and concepts
  • Data governance, monitoring and lineage
  • Awareness of machine learning, decisioning systems, rules engines, analytics
  • The broader ecosystem of data-related technologies
