About the role
We are seeking Peer Practitioners to join a new wellbeing support service in the Greater Shepparton area. Using your lived experience of mental health challenges, you will provide short-term, relational support to service users. You will work within a team of Peer Practitioners and specialist support workers, offering flexible connections including telehealth, outreach, and on-site support over a 2–3 week period.
About the service
- Distress Brief Support (DBS) is a community-based, early intervention program providing immediate, compassionate support to people experiencing psychological distress.
- Part of a national trial under the National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Agreement, DBS emphasizes co-design, lived experience leadership, and community engagement.
- In Greater Shepparton, the service is delivered entirely by workers with lived experience in partnership with Primary Care Connect.
- DBS offers 2–3 weeks of tailored support, including referrals and community connections, based on individual needs.
Key responsibilities
- Use your lived/living experience of mental ill health and recovery to build connection, offer hope, and support others on their recovery journey.
- Deliver high-quality services to respond to the unique needs of people, offering a flexible and person-centred approach.
- Support people to navigate services and connect with community supports that help them build confidence, independence, and meaningful participation in daily life.
- Actively contribute to co-design and service improvement, championing the voice and leadership of people with lived experience.
- Participate in regular training, peer co-reflection, and professional development to strengthen your practice.
What you'll bring
- Experience using lived experience in a dedicated Peer role is strongly desirable.
- Experience or commitment to working directly with people with mental health challenges and their families/carers.
- Understanding of how Lived Experience work is distinct, including its values, principles, and practice.
- Skills, or willingness to develop skills, in collaboratively planning wellbeing supports using evidence-informed approaches.
- Commitment to providing empathic, person-centered, relational support.
- Completion of Intentional Peer Support Core and/or Advanced training is highly regarded.
- Salary packaging up to $15,899 p.a. allows you to allocate a portion of your pre-tax income to cover living expenses (e.g. rent, mortgage, child care, car leasing expenses etc.)
- Option to access Meal and Entertainment allowance up to $2,650 p.a. via Salary Packaging.
