About the team

The AWS Environmental team is an expanding and dynamic team that is critical to enabling AWS's growth around the world, ensuring compliance of AWS's global operations, including physical data centers and other AWS facilities, customer-facing enterprises and products. The team develops and implements AWS's global environmental programs.

Role objective

We are seeking an Environmental Engineer to support AWS environmental compliance in Australia. The environmental engineer will ensure standards and policies support regulatory compliance and provide appropriate environmental guidance to regional operations teams. The role supports environmental performance analysis, reporting, metrics monitoring, due diligence processes, and guidance to operations teams in implementing Amazon environmental procedures. The engineer will work with internal and external partners including government entities, contractors, consultants, design, construction, operations and other key stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Assess and support compliance with national and local environmental regulations, contractual obligations, and internal Amazon policies.
  • Support the growth of the business through environmental due diligence reviews and permitting support.
  • Play a key role in regional environmental programs by integrating with engineering, construction, and operations to drive an environmentally responsible culture within the organization.
  • Support the maintenance of and compliance with implemented Environmental Management Systems (EMS).
  • Ensure work performed by contractors, consultants, and employees is completed in accordance with Amazon standards.
  • Develop, analyze, and forecast environmental metrics; horizon scan for risk and effectively communicate insights to internal stakeholders.
  • Support environmental audits to drive continuous improvement.
  • Build collaborative relationships with stakeholders to identify and manage risks early.
  • Submit time-critical environmental reports to various governmental agencies.
  • Complete thorough environmental investigations and regulatory reports, including development and implementation of appropriate corrective and preventive actions in coordination with operations and stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering/science, geology, geography, biology, chemistry or related field with 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in environmental compliance, auditing, permitting/reporting, waste management, EMS, and ISO 14001 standards.
  • Broad knowledge of Australian environmental regulations and licensing requirements; strong project management skills and proficiency with Microsoft 365.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including comfort interfacing with senior leaders.
  • Experience in a fast-paced, growing organization.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience implementing practical improvements.
  • Self-starter who identifies improvement opportunities and applies new knowledge to enhance environmental performance.
