Sydney, New South Wales, Australia Health Equity Matters Full time
Overview

Health Equity Matters is Australia's peak national organisation for the community HIV and LGBTIQA+ health response. It supports member organisations working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities, people living with HIV, sex workers, people who use drugs, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Through advocacy, policy, and health promotion, it leads Australia's effort to end HIV transmission and promote the health of its communities. In the Asia Pacific region, Health Equity Matters promotes effective policy, strengthens local community leadership, and supports communities in their work in HIV, health, and human rights.

About This Role

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to begin or build a career in public policy. The role provides hands-on experience in developing strategic policy advice to support Health Equity Matters' advocacy, particularly in relation to the HIV Taskforce Report and the Ninth National HIV Strategy. You will contribute to the development of high-quality positions and submissions that are central to achieving Health Equity Matters' goals. The role also involves strong engagement with Health Equity Matters' member organisations, supporting the community-controlled HIV response. It is critical to the organisation's mission to virtually eliminate HIV transmission and improve the health of people with HIV. You'll gain valuable exposure to national policy processes, work in a supportive and collaborative environment, and help drive meaningful change in public health.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of and high-quality strategic deliverables from the National HIV Taskforce under the direction of the Principal Director, Australia Program, including researching and formulating positions on complex issues.
  • Conceptualising Australia's community-led HIV response, the complexity of Australia's public health system and the role of federalism in influencing public policy decision making in Australia.
  • Support the Principal Director, Australia Program to address members' enquiries in relation to national LGBTIQA+ health policy.
  • Ensure that the lived experience of people with HIV, the challenges of navigating HIV risk, and the intersectionality of marginality and disadvantage are central to the organisation's advocacy.
  • Work across the Health Equity Matters membership and other stakeholders to identify and prioritise policy and strategic aims and objectives.
  • Utilise a wide range of skills, particularly project management, to progress strategic deliverables in a fast-paced environment.
  • Assist with reporting all government funded projects.
  • Understand, implement, participate in, and promote Health Equity Matters' business processes, policies and procedures, and WHS objectives.
  • Perform other appropriate duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal Director, Australia Program.

New to the HIV Sector?

We recognise that formal qualifications or sector experience aren't the only indicators of someone's ability to succeed in this role. If you\'re unsure whether your experience fits, we still encourage you to apply.
