
Director of General Medicine

Western Health is seeking a dynamic and experienced General Physician to be the Director of General Medicine — one of the largest and busiest inpatient units at Western Health.
Location and Employment- Location: Western Health, Multi-Site
- Employment Type: Full-time
- Salary: Up to HM42 based on experience
- Support the Clinical Services Director and Divisional Director to ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe and timely care, including overseeing clinical governance, workforce development, and service improvement in alignment with division and organisational goals.
- Provide effective and efficient leadership, strategic direction, operational and financial performance for the General Medicine Unit.
- Manage access and flow, optimise inpatient capacity, and facilitate timely admissions, discharges, and follow-up in collaboration with key hospital departments and external partners.
- Foster a strong, engaged multidisciplinary team culture through staff management, including recruitment, supervision, performance development, and wellbeing support for senior and junior medical staff.
- Lead continuous quality improvement initiatives, ensure compliance with accreditation and safety standards, and support innovation in models of care.
- Oversee the financial performance of the unit, including budget planning, resource allocation, and identifying cost-effective practices to maintain or improve service delivery.
- Work with Site Directors at Sunshine and Footscray Hospitals and oversee the expansion of General Medicine to the new Melton Hospital by 2029; ensure standardised, equitable care across all WH sites.
- This is a permanent full-time position, comprising of 0.6 non-clinical and 0.4 clinical EFT.
- Current registration with AHPRA as a Medical Specialist
- Hold Fellowship with RACP and approved for adult general medicine scope of practice at Western Health
- Proven clinical skills and experience
- Experience in senior management positions, preferably at multi-site health services
- Experience in the support and supervision of senior and junior medical staff

Western Health also provides the primary healthcare service at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, a women's prison located in Ravenhall.
