Office location: Lidcombe or S&I regional location by negotiation. Salary ranges from $109,102 to $120,542 + Superannuation, relative to experience.

About the role

Our Water and Wetlands and Coastal Science team is appointing 2 Scientist- Wetland Inundation Analyst to monitor, evaluate and report on the health of iconic wetlands in the Murray-Darling Basin. This role integrates development of scripts for advanced computer-based data processing and modelling to predict and evaluate inundation extent and trends across these wetlands. It also incorporates remote sensing and spatial analysis, data management and evaluation, field work to monitor wetland hydrology, and assisting with technical reports and information products for both expert and non-expert audiences.

About You

To be successful, you will have experience developing remote sensing and spatial analysis processes and strong experience developing scripts using Python for environmental data analysis and modelling. You will use remote sensing products and models to track floodplain wetland inundation and analyse trends in wetland hydrology using spatial datasets. You will have planning, organising and field-based skills to support fieldwork for wetland inundation monitoring, with opportunities to conduct field work across several wetlands in remote locations within the NSW Murray-Darling Basin. You will communicate outcomes to both expert and non-expert audiences.

Key knowledge and experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in computer-based analysis and modelling of environmental spatial data
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in data management, remote sensing, spatial analysis, biostatistical software programs and scripting
  • Demonstrated experience in scientific field work related to wetland/ floodplain monitoring or equivalent
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Murray-Darling Basin floodplain and wetland ecosystems
  • A science degree or postgraduate degree in environmental science, geospatial science or related discipline
  • Extensive scripting experience using Python for modelling and computer-based analysis of environmental spatial data
  • Demonstrated experience in data management, remote sensing and spatial analysis using Arc Pro, QGIS or similar software
  • Relevant ecological field work monitoring experience
  • Willingness to travel to remote wetlands intermittently (up to 5 days at times) to conduct wetland inundation surveys
  • Experience conducting drone wetland surveys and image processing; RePL certification desirable
  • A valid Australian Drivers Licence
