Responsibilities
AEMOs Forecasting division is responsible for providing medium and long -term forecasts of Australia's energy supply and demand. The team is responsible for delivering critical data that underpins many of our major reports, including AEMO's Electricity Statement of Opportunities, Gas Statement of Opportunities, and the Integrated System Plan. The team provides:
- Regional electricity and gas consumption forecasts for the National Electricity Market and the Wholesale Energy Market.
- Forecasts of future investment in electrification and energy efficiency
- Forecasts of uptake and usage of distributed energy resources, including rooftop solar and batteries.
- The pipeline of future generation and battery projects currently progressing.
- Procurement and coordination of key consultancy deliverables and presentation of these materials to key stakeholders
- Bespoke analysis to support decision making both internal and external to AEMO interpret a large amount of information to understand industry sectors in transition, technological and behavioural change, and periods of potentially disruptive transformation.
The Energy Forecasting Principal Analyst will support the delivery of energy consumption forecasts for key publications. This involves developing, advising, and effectively communicating medium to long term (2 to 30 year) forecasts of electricity and gas consumption and distributed energy resources. You will use a mix of forecasting methods such as statistical, econometric, economic, and technical/engineering approaches.
In producing these deliverables, the Principal Analyst will lead the work on significant forecasting components, demonstrate experience in interpreting data to provide strategic insights, applying technical and regulatory knowledge and make high quality contributions to reports. You will also contribute to AEMO's understanding of, and capabilities in forecasting of issues related to consumption such as increasing electrification, energy efficiency and changing consumer energy patterns.
What You Will Be Doing
- Apply advanced modelling methods, economic theory, behavioural economics, and technical knowledge to design and test models for forecasting consumption patterns for electricity and gas.
- Effectively communicate approaches, results, and key messages to internal and external stakeholders either in written reports or through actively participation in working groups and stakeholder forums.
- Play a leading role in the delivery of key industry publications, focusing on the role of electricity, gas, electrification, and energy efficiency for all markets in Australia that AEMO oversees.
- Collaborate with other Forecasting teams on consumption and demand forecasts, and multi-sectoral modelling.
- Develop and contribute to common code libraries for integrating data and modelling electricity and gas consumption, including maintaining quality documentation of procedures and processes.
Education
Bachelor or advanced degree in a relevant discipline (economic, engineering, mathematics, operations research, etc).
Experience and Knowledge
- Wealth of experience in demand forecasting or data analytics within the energy sector.
- Well-developed and demonstrated interpersonal, negotiation and problem-solving skills including effectively engaging with internal and external stakeholders to ensure work activities are seamlessly delivered across teams.
- Well-developed and demonstrated ability in leading technical studies and the interpretation and presentation of results, including the use of PowerBI or Shiny for data visualisation.
- Strong quantitative and data analytical skills (preferably in R or Python) using databases or large datasets and demonstrated ability to use this knowledge in the design and delivery of analysis that is accepted by diverse stakeholders.
- Experience in designing and coding statistical models and creating visualizations to answer varied operational, business and/or regulatory questions. Skills in software development, model workflow and code libraries will be an advantage.
