CSIRO Publishing is an editorially independent, not-for-profit business unit within Australia's national science agency. We publish internationally recognised journals, books and digital content spanning agriculture, plant and animal sciences, chemistry, health and environmental science — from scholarly journals to trade books and children's titles.

We are seeking a dynamic, commercially astute leader to guide CSIRO Publishing into its next chapter. As Director, you will shape strategic direction, lead transformation to a sustainable open access model, and implement long-term financial and commissioning strategies. You'll oversee commercial performance, foster innovation and continuous improvement, and engage with stakeholders to position CSIRO Publishing as a leader in science communication.

Key priorities
  • Strategic leadership – Set and deliver business strategy, identify opportunities, manage risk, and secure resources to achieve long-term goals.
  • Business transformation – Transition scholarly journals to open access and develop a financially viable commissioning strategy for books.
  • Commercial and financial management – Manage a multi-million-dollar budget with full P&L responsibility and expand national and international market opportunities.
  • Team leadership – Lead and develop a high-performing team, fostering a values-based culture.
  • Stakeholder engagement – Build strong relationships across the publishing ecosystem and within CSIRO.
You will bring
  • Proven senior publishing leadership, strong commercial acumen, success in transformational change, and experience managing high-performing teams.
  • Knowledge of digital publishing technologies and relevant tertiary qualifications are essential; experience in scientific or not-for-profit environments is desirable.
