Overview

The Planning Institute of Australia is seeking a Head of Events, Learning and Partnerships to oversee the Events, Learning and Partnership Team and manage delivery of several key national events and programs. This position is instrumental in driving PIA's Professional Development strategy, fostering partnerships, and delivering key national events and national learning initiatives. This is a contract position of a minimum of six months with the possibility of extension to twelve months. Flexible working arrangements will be considered.

The Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) is the national body representing planning professionals in Australia. PIA promotes excellence in planning and our mission is to inspire planners and elevate their role in shaping Australia\'s future. PIA does this through championing the value of planners, leading the profession, strong advocacy and contemporary education.

PIA has around 30 staff nationwide, and we connect with more than 10,000 planning professionals annually.

Key Responsibilities
  • Team Leadership: Lead and manage the Events, Learning and Partnerships Team, providing direction, coaching and mentorship.
  • Congress Director: Serve as the Project Manager for the annual national Planning Congress, overseeing all aspects of its delivery.
  • Business Development: Source and secure sponsorships for national events, fostering relationships with potential partners, supported by the Events and Partnerships Officer.
  • Sponsorship Management: Maintain and nurture relationships with sponsors, ensuring sponsor benefits are delivered at key events.
  • Award Program Management: Oversee the PIA National Awards for Planning Excellence program, including the annual awards ceremony, and work with Divisions to support their delivery of the State Awards for Planning Excellence.

  • Key Selection Criteria:
  • Extensive experience in event management and leadership, with a proven track record in delivering large-scale events both in person and virtually.
  • Highly developed project management skills and ability to show initiative and have capacity to work without supervision.
  • Strong business development skills and a successful history in sourcing event partners, sponsors and exhibitors.
  • Excellent relationship management abilities, with experience in building and maintaining partnerships.
  • Financial acumen and budget management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and organisational abilities to coordinate relationships with sponsors, members, external stakeholders, and team members.
  • Proficiency in managing and motivating teams, providing effective leadership and mentorship.
  • Proficiency in using digital event platforms, streaming technologies and virtual engagement tools, including Zoom and Events Air.
  • Developed computer skills including the ability to use word processing and spreadsheet packages.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders and Divisions.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • A degree in Event Management, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
  • Australian citizenship, permanent residency, or valid work visa required.
  • Experience working for a member-based Association.
Reporting

This role reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer. The Head of Events, Partnerships and Learning will also work collaboratively with the Chief Executive Officer. Strong working relationships will also be necessary across PIA.
