Overview

Join to apply for the Apprentice Fabricator role at Illawarra Mercury. This position is based at Oak Flats Services Depot and reports to the Fabrication Coordinator.

Responsibilities
  • Support the Workshop and Fleet team with fabrication and welding activities.
  • Gain practical skills in welding, cutting, shaping, and assembling metal components using tools and machinery in a hands-on workshop environment.
Qualifications and Program Details
  • Complete a Certificate III in Engineering, Fabrication course at North Wollongong TAFE.
  • Open to school leavers, mature age applicants, and/or those who have already commenced their Certificate III in Engineering.
  • Opportunity dependent upon external funding confirmation; successful applicants will commence in January 2026 if funding is confirmed.
  • Apprenticeships cover both theoretical and practical requirements of on-the-job and off-the-job training, with formal qualifications and four years of practical experience after completion.
Program Details and Benefits
  • Temporary full-time up to 4 years (or duration of the apprenticeship).
  • 38 hours per week with access to a 9 Day Fortnight.
  • Salary range from $601.70 per week (16-year-old) to $827.40 per week (18+) with 12% super.
  • On-the-job training; compulsory course costs paid by Council; approved leave to attend TAFE; tool allowance.
