Deputy Chairperson

The Minister for Disability, The Hon Lizzie Blandthorn MP is pleased to call for applications for the role of Deputy Chairperson for the Council.

The Office for Disability supports Council members as needed, such as providing briefings before and after meetings.

As Deputy Chairperson of the Council, you have the opportunity to provide independent advice to the Minister for Disability about whole-of-government policies and initiatives to increase the inclusion and participation of people with disability in the Victorian community. The Deputy Chairperson also supports the Chairperson in their role leading and representing the Council. You will help to facilitate meetings and build strong relationships with members and key stakeholders.

The position of Deputy Chairperson is an identified position to be filled by people with disability.

The role is remunerated, and the Deputy Chairperson will be appointed for three years from July 2025 to July 2028.

Qualifications

Applicants should be able to demonstrate high levels of performance in their chosen fields, be highly regarded in their communities, and have expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  1. an understanding of key policies and issues relating to disability
  2. strategic thinking, planning and leadership skills and experience on boards or committees of management
  3. good understanding of accountability and governance for statutory bodies
  4. effective consultation and engagement with stakeholders.
About The Organisation

The Council was established in 2007 under the Disability Act 2006 (Vic) (the Act). The Council provides independent policy and strategy advice to the Minister for Disability to increase the inclusion and participation of people with disability in the Victorian community.

To fulfil its functions, the Council formulates an annual forward agenda and holds regular meetings every two months. In addition to the regular meetings, Council members are also invited to attend meetings on specific topics – usually 6-8 meetings per year.

The Council works with government and the community to promote disability inclusion, with a focus on the development, implementation, and monitoring of the state disability plan.

The Council is supported by the Office for Disability, which is located within the Disability Reform and Complex Needs Branch of the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.
