Overview

Fixed Term 0.2 FTE Staff Specialist – Department of Older People's Mental Health, WSLHD Mental Health Service. Location: NSW Health, North Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia. Term: until 30 June 2028. The role involves providing tertiary level consultative services to NSW public inpatient services caring for people experiencing extreme behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). There are no procedural, outpatient or on-call requirements within the role. The team is small and includes peer support and opportunities for personal and professional development. The successful applicant will participate in planning and service development and may travel across Local Health District Regions to deliver team-based clinical liaison services in inpatient settings. The position will be based in Western Sydney but is negotiable across NSW with majority of work in the Greater Sydney region.

The successful applicant will be a senior clinician on the development and operation of the statewide tertiary clinical consultation and liaison service supporting NSW public inpatient services caring for people with BPSD. The team includes a full-time CNC, a full-time senior occupational therapist, and a part-time (0.2) staff specialist (or equivalent 0.1 VMO); additional support is provided by the Older People's Mental Health Service (OPMH) and the NSW OPMH Policy Unit.

Responsibilities
  • Provide tertiary level consultative services to NSW public inpatient services caring for people experiencing extreme behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD).
  • Participate in planning and service development; travel across Local Health District Regions as required; deliver team-based CL (clinical liaison) services within inpatient settings.
  • Contribute to the development and operation of the statewide tertiary clinical consultation and liaison service; collaborate with the OPMH Service and Policy Unit.
  • Work as part of a small multidisciplinary team with opportunities for personal and professional development.
  • Engage in activities related to teaching, supervision, and research as applicable to the position.
  • Note: There are no procedural, outpatient or on-call requirements in this role.
Essential Requirements For Appointment
  • Registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (or equivalent under the Staff Specialists (State) Award); Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency; current NSW Environment Protection Authority license (if applicable).
  • Certificate in Old Age Psychiatry; sound clinical knowledge in Old Age Psychiatry; experience providing clinical consultation/liaison to services caring for people with BPSD.
  • Ability to travel across Local Health District Regions and provide team-based CL services within inpatient settings.
  • Sound knowledge of Recovery-based clinical practice and integrated Mental Health Care.
  • Demonstrated senior medical practitioner capabilities including: high-level interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work within a multidisciplinary team; involvement in quality assurance and evidence-based practice; commitment to teaching and supervision; familiarity with research concepts and a commitment to supporting research where applicable.

  • Qualifications and credentials required for core scope of practice in the specialty; evidence of additional qualifications, skills or experience relevant to the role.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with medical and health service colleagues as part of a multidisciplinary team; effective communication with patients and colleagues.
  • Excellent organisational, supervision and collaboration skills with ability to build respectful relationships.
  • Commitment to maintaining knowledge, skills and professional performance to contemporary practice; experience in quality assurance and translating research into practice to improve patient safety and quality.
  • Ability to manage time and resources efficiently and contribute to the healthcare system's effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership capabilities including systems thinking, resilience, self-care, integrity, and capacity to lead, develop others, and govern effectively.
  • Commitment to Education, Training and Research as applicable to the position.
