About the role

Join our Clinical Coding team as a Coding Quality Officer (CQO), a permanent full-time opportunity based at South Brisbane due to recent promotion within the team.

The CQO will ensure the highest quality of clinical classification by Statewide, Mater coders. Reporting to the Clinical Coding Services Manager, the CQO will maintain accurate implementation of Australian Coding Standards, audit, educate, mentor, and train coders. Providing expert coding solutions for challenging cases and new casemix, oversee processes, and offer coding expertise for both onsite and desktop PHI coding audits.

Make a significant impact in enhancing healthcare quality and accuracy. The key responsibilities of this position include:

Responsibilities
  • Provide expert advice to improve the accuracy of clinical coding through regular audits and adherence to the Mater Coding Quality Plan
  • Initiate, manage, and conduct coding quality improvement activities, offering timely advice and feedback to the team
  • Identify training needs, develop and deliver education and training sessions for Mater Coding staff and trainee coders
  • Mentor Mater Coders and student HIM/Clinical coding placements
  • Perform data analysis, validation, and reconciliation activities related to coding and DRG data
  • Collaborate with coders and advisory bodies to find solutions to complex coding scenarios and implement changes for new casemix
  • Act as an Advanced Clinical Coder when needed to meet coding completion KPIs
  • Test new versions and enhancements in key systems, providing expertise in iPM, WebPAS, 3M Codefinder, and OnBase
  • Advise the Clinical Coding Services Manager on opportunities for coding quality improvement and develop strategies accordingly
  • Facilitate and assist with health fund audits, responding to auditor's reviews and providing education to external stakeholders
  • Lead and participate in meetings, offering expert opinions and responses
About you

The successful candidate will have a HIMAA Introductory/Intermediate Clinical Coding Course/Certificate IV in Clinical Classification (or equivalent) in addition to the following:

  • Bachelor of Health Information Management or Clinical Coding Qualification
  • At least 5 years' experience in Clinical Coding using current edition of ICD 10 AM and ACHI and sound knowledge of Australian Coding standards and AR-DRGs
  • Demonstrated experience in quality activities and audits a Audit qualification is highly desirable
  • Expert knowledge of Coding quality and audit activities
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of current privacy and medico-legal legislation and standards with capacity to apply that knowledge across a complex and large amount of PHI claims and associated information
  • Eligible for Health Information Management Association of Australia Membership
  • Drive to improve and mentor a large, focused team
  • Ability to work in both an onsite and online coding team environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) to a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Able to prioritise and effectively manage a heavy and constantly changing workload, to meet service demands, productivity targets and deadlines
  • Excellent Microsoft office and analytical skills with the ability to extract, interpret and present data
  • Experience using 3M Codefinder software
  • Excellent planning and time management skills coupled with the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
